Norv Turner Still a Bonehead Coach

Tony Salinas: Norv Turner Still a Bonehead Coach

The San Diego Chargers help kick off the new NFL Preseason in a big TV game tonight against the Green Bay Packers on ESPN. And, I can't for the life of me figure out why Chargers head coach Norv Turner still has a job.

A few years ago I used to give out "Bonehead of the Week" awards to college and pro football coaches here at this website. After awhile it was the same guys always in the running, so there was no reason to keep giving out the award. Norv Turner was always in the running! He won quite a few times.

Every year San Diego is supposed to be a Super Bowl threat. Every year they fall short. Usually it's in the playoffs. But, last year the Chargers didn't even make the playoffs...going 8-8 against a fairly easy schedule (nobody in their division finished over .500). Yet that STILL wasn't enough to get Turner fired!

Most importantly for gamblers, last year the Chargers were just 6-10 against the Vegas spread because oddsmakers and the public kept giving them too much respect.

  • They lost outright as favorites to Denver, Oakland, Kansas City, and the NY Jets.

  • They were 3-7 straight up and ATS against teams that finished .500 or better, and 1-3 straight up and ATS against teams who were better than .500. Think about that for a second...San Diego couldn't post a winning straight up record last year even though they only played four games against opponents who had winning records!

  • They padded their record against non-contenders like Jacksonville, Minnesota, Miami, and Buffalo (who all finished 6-10 or worse).

  • They had troubles in the turnover department again, which shouldn't be happening any more with a veteran quarterback. Well coached teams win the turnover category!

  • The defense fell apart in almost every way imaginable.

This is not a well-coached team, and never has been. Turner peaked as an offensive coordinator...and even then he needed a strong head coach looking over him to reign in some of the poor percentage decisions. Left to his own devices, he was able to abuse bad opposing teams enough to make it to the playoffs for awhile. But, even that ability has disappeared as the league adjusted.

When you're watching the TV networks hype pro football, you hear all about the superstars, the coaching legends, and the greatest game on earth. Just remember that you can make a lot of money as a Las Vegas bettor figuring out who the BONEHEADS are at coach and at quarterback! You might as well start making a list now with the start of the exhibition slate in pro football. College football is a few weeks away, and you should be doing the same thing there.

If you're sitting at a poker table, you need to find out who the worst player there is and take his money. If you're betting football, you need to find out who the BONEHEADS are that oddsmakers keep overrating so you can take the sportsbooks' money.

Now, all this isn't to say that I'm betting against San Diego tonight for my customers. There are plenty of games to choose from. And, I only release the plays that I'm personally betting the biggest myself. Plus, Green Bay has so many injuries right now that it's possible to make a case for San Diego at a cheap price. Even BONEHEAD coaches cover spreads sometimes, particularly if they're facing a team that's more worried about staying healthy than getting a result.

The only way to make sure you're getting the best HIGH ROLLER games is to purchase my game day releases or to sign up for my personal service. A daily slate of football and baseball will usually run you about $15-20 if you want to try things out. You can purchase my full Preseason for just $69 on the early-bird rate. Or, pay $199 for the full season if you commit now.

If you have any questions call my office at 1-888-536-8880. I won't be able to talk to you directly on a busy sports day like this. One of my representatives will be happy to help you out.

I've heard a lot of people in Las Vegas say that you shouldn't even bet Preseason football because it's so hard to know who's going to be trying to win when the backups are on the field in the fourth quarter. I'll tell you what...anybody who says that is a BONEHEAD! Yes you CAN WIN! You have to pick your spots to find the best options based on quarterback rotations, coaching tendencies, and any "us against the world" team mentalities that often show up with prior year disappointments that have a chip on their shoulder.

Nobody's going to win every bet. Pocket aces don't always win in Texas Hold-em. To beat the book, you only have to hit 53%. I'm a HIGH ROLLER because I've been able to do that for decades. I'm extremely confident I'll be able to do it again this month in the NFL Preseason.

Don't pass the Preseason when there are so many easy winners on the board. Don't take the worst of it by betting your leans, hunches, or favorite local teams. Make sure you're GETTING THE BEST OF IT with TONY SALINAS!
