UNLV Good, But Overpriced

With handicapping legend Tony Salinas

We pay a lot of attention to UNLV basketball here in Vegas. Obviously there aren't any pro teams in Nevada. UNLV plays college football, but does it badly. It's on the basketball floor where sports bettors in Vegas can find a team worth rooting.

Unfortunately, that has resulted this year in a UNLV team that's good, but not offering much betting value.

Straight up: 10-2
Vs. the spread: 4-6

There were two non-board games.

This is a team that can play with anybody. They knocked off highly regarded Wisconsin earlier this season, then took care of Virginia Tech to win an 8-team tournament out in Anaheim. Two Saturdays ago they led Louisville at the half on the road in a bad body clock game before fading in the second half. Louisville is ranked 25th right now in the Coaches' Poll, and probably deserves to be higher.

There's a big difference though between playing very well occasionally, and playing well enough to cover spreads night in and night out. That's where UNLV has fallen short. They recently were stunned as big favorites by Cal Santa Barbara, losing outright at home as 15-point favorites. They also barely survived Boise State as a big favorite.

Like most Mountain West teams...dangerous, but not consistent!

Those of you who backed BYU this past Saturday against UCLA know what I'm talking about. BYU had been undefeated. Jimmer Fredette has been getting early season 'Player of the Year' hype. Yet, as a favorite, BYU trailed the whole game against an opponent they shouldn't have had to sweat.

And, we can't forget about New Mexico. They earned a great seed last year in the Big Dance, only to embarrass themselves because they couldn't produce consistently.

I'm personally looking forward to UNLV vs. Kansas State Tuesday Night. That game will be played in Kansas City, and will be televised nationally by ESPN 2. I'd like for them to do well. It's always great to see the hometown team score a big win. And, a TV victory would guarantee that UNLV will keep being overpriced as a favorite against teams as week as UCSB and Boise State!

I'm also looking forward to the Mountain West race this year. You may not get to see them on TV much once the ACC and Big East start hogging the air waves. San Diego State is for real. BYU, UNLV, and New Mexico are going to be dangerous in the Big Dance even if they probably lack the consistency to make a deep run. Be sure you watch UNLV-Kansas State and other big TV games this week to get yourself ready for league play and the postseason. There will definitely be a big-time feel to these games the next two days:

TONIGHT: William & Mary at North Carolina and UNLV at Kansas State on ESPN2
WEDNESDAY: Texas at Michigan State, Missouri at Illinois, and Xavier at Gonzaga on ESPN2

The colleges will be kind of quiet after that through Christmas. The NBA will take up the slack with San Antonio/Orlando and Miami/Phoenix Thursday on TNT, and that big quintupleheader on ABC and ESPN on Christmas Day.

And, you've probably figured out that college hoops is on ESPN2 this week because BOWL GAMES will be on ESPN!

TONIGHT: Louisville vs. Southern Miss in the Beef O'Brady Bowl
WEDNESDAY: Utah vs. Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl (you may see me there!)
THURSDAY: Navy vs. San Diego State in the Poinsettia Bowl
FRIDAY: Tulsa vs. Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl

I hope you'll join me every day online a few hours before the games start to get enjoy BOWLS & BASKETBALL. You'll get the exact same plays I'm betting the biggest myself in all the big TV action.
