Tar Heels Overrated

With handicapping legend Tony Salinas

You'd think the North Carolina Tar Heels would have done enough last year to discourage the wagering public from investing in them on the college hoop hardwoods.

Carolina was a highly regarded team in the polls to start the 2009-10 season...but didn't impress early on...then completely fell apart in ACC play. North Carolina didn't even reach the Big Dance!

In fact, they carried a 10-19 ATS record into the NIT tournament...where they used some hot shooting and friendly officiating to make it all the way to the finals. You could tell ESPN really wanted them to reach New York (I warn you about this every season). They made it to New York, but lost in the NIT Championship to Dayton 79-58

This year's team once again looks to be overrated. They could only beat unheralded Lipscomb by 14 points in a regular season tune-up. After a nice win over a Hofstra in the first round of the Puerto Rico Tip Off, the Heels put together this sequence in the rest of the tournament:

*North Carolina (-6) lost to Minnesota 72-67. Carolina was outrebounded, outshot, and outplayed in every segement of the game.

*North Carolina (-4) lost to Vanderbilt 72-65. The final score shows it was almost a replay of the loss to Minnesota. North Carolina rebounded better, but committed 22 turnovers and didn't' shoot very well.

This wasn't at all what the betting markets were expecting. The Tar Heels were basically tournament co-favorites with West Virginia. Instead, they finished fourth.

Looks like not much has changed from last year! North Carolina, though they were supposed to be more mature this year, still struggles with the fundamentals. They're still dramatically overpriced except in games where the refs are helping them move through the NIT.

It pays to go against the powers as a general rule. Sure, there are some big name teams that are able to clear the hurdles that oddsmakers and the betting public set for them. But, you're generally getting 8-5 the best of it by taking the free points and going the other way. Based on what happened on the court, Carolina didn't deserve to be favored at all over Minnesota or Vanderbilt on a neutral floor. Turns out you were getting 11 free points in both games!

If you want wall-to-wall action in both football and basketball over Thanksgiving weekend, click here to make sure you're with Tony Salinas!

I know most of you are focused on football right now. And, I'll be the same way when Thanksgiving Day arrives and we have a huge weekend to feast upon (more on that in a report that will run Thursday morning). In these next couple of days of basketball, see if you can take advantage of free points in the baskets by betting against big name teams.

*In the NBA, you're already seeing some hyped teams and hot starters cool off in a way that's made smart handicappers money. The Miami Heat are having trouble covering spreads, just like I told you would happen. There are busy pro hoops schedules Tuesday and Wednesday.

*In the colleges, there are many big name teams playing in tournament action that's right up the alley for this approach. That seems to be a story every year in Maui, the Caribbean, or wherever. The teams everyone thought would play great come out sluggish because they're not in synch yet. Opposing underdogs get fired up for their chance to upset a powerhouse...and help Las Vegas gamblers like you and me cash some tickets.

You can purchase my basketball daily a few hours before tipoff. Or, sign up for the full season at a discounted rate. If you have any questions, call my office at 1-888-536-8880.
