Can You Feel the Heat?!

Handicapping Tips From Legendary High Roller TONY SALINAS!

It seems like it's HOT all the time in Las Vegas. That's okay with me. Guys my age like it hot!

Most of North America seemed to either be in a heat wave on Sunday...or to at least have temperatures that were warmer than normal for early June. I've been warning you about this already this season. When temperatures go up, scoring goes up. And, BOTH keep happening on Sundays!

What happened yesterday?

There were hardly any Unders anywhere!

*Toronto and the New York Yankees stayed Under up in Canada. The roof was shut. That was an indoor game. And that can be a low scoring park with the roof shut because the indoor lighting isn't that great.

*Colorado and Arizona stayed Under. The roof was shut there as well. Plus, Jiminez was pitching...only the pitcher having the most dominant season we've seen in decades. That's two Unders so far Sunday afternoon.

*Boston and Baltimore stayed Under. No excuses there. It was hot on the East Coast, and these offenses didn't do much. A true outdoor Under.

Did any other Sunday afternoon games go Under? NO! NOT A SINGLE ONE!

Run your finger down the schedule. 13 runs in New York. 11 runs in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. 9-run pushes in Washington and Kansas City. The Indians and White Sox had 12 runs by the fifth inning on their way to 15. Out in California, Braves/Dodgers and Twins/A's both coasted Over in sunny conditions. Down in was triple digits on the thermometer on the field, and double digits on the scoreboard.

A lot of handicappers like to tell you about stuff after it happened. I like telling you before it happens! I keep telling you that hot temperatures help scoring...and we keep seeing warm Sundays with a lot of runs on the board. I first mentioned it several weeks ago. Hopefully you've been taking advantage.

It's only June...and it's already feeling like July and August in some places. Imagine what July and August are going to feel like if this keeps up!

Hitters love warm weather. Starting pitchers get tired sooner, which means that lousy long relievers are pitching in the middle of the game. Crowds are usually good as long as it doesn't get too hot...and offenses tend to perform better in front of electric crowds too. Now, sometimes it does get TOO hot and everyone races to get the game over with. Be on the lookout for that down the road...and for any team that just wears down from playing a lot of consecutive games in the heat. Right now, the money is there for the taking.

Vegas only had one total posted as high as 10 on Sunday afternoon (Tampa Bay/Texas). How many games reached double digits? Talk about getting the best of it!

Sometimes it's the simple things that work best. Put your calculators away. File away the spreadsheets for another time. Don't worry about modeling this or simulating that with your computer. When it starts to get hot, bet Over! If an offense is seeing a bright sunny day after a bunch of night games, bet Over! If you think the starting pitchers don't have what it takes to go six or seven innings, bet Over!
