EXTRA, EXTRA ...IT'S TIME NOW TO HOOP IT UP!

Hey, the football guys don't have the sports stage all to themselves any more ... Starting Friday there's wall-to-wall College Basketball for the next five months plus the NBA is rockin'-and-rollin' these days and who would have ever thought the Philadelphia 76ers would have shot out of the starting gate like this (that's back-to-back-to-back season-opening wins against 10-point favorite Miami, 9½-point home fav Washington and 9½-point road favorite Chicago) before finally losing a game?

Guess either too many folks believed the preseason press clippings that these Sixers were only gonna win 10 or 11 games this year or else maybe Philly is legit ... stay tuned.

We also know just a few games into this here-and-now NBA season that it's gonna take time for a couple of teams to jell - namely the Brooklyn Nets and the Memphis Grizzlies who both need a refresher course in how to play team basketball or hadn't you noticed the Nets lost by 21 points in Orlando last Sunday or that the Grizz already lost road games in San Antonio and Dallas after being such a "tough out" a year ago.

Want an NBA "sleeper" who could make you some greenbacks? May we suggest the Minnesota Timberwolves who already have one of the league's great scorers in F Kevin Love but don't be surprised if Minny wins 53-to-55 regular-season games and gets home-court advantage in an opening-round NBA Western Conference playoff set.

As far as the college kids go, the "pub" these days is going to the usual suspects such as Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State and Kansas but keep a close eye peeled on Oklahoma State. The Cowboys were one-and-done in last year's NCAA Tournament with a lopsided Round One loss to Oregon but G Marcus Smart is a legit Player of the Year candidate while we also expect VCU to make a genuine run at all the marbles this 2013-14 season.

An early-season game at Virginia should be fun for VCU (that's on Nov. 12th) and the Rams - ranked #14 in the opening Associated Press Top 25 poll - play defense like nobody's business and maybe this is the year Shaka Smart cuts down the nets.

THE NFL PLAYOFF PUSH IS ON!

It's never too early to start checking out the post-season possibilities for teams that nobody thought would get there in the first place and so let's spend a moment or two on what's ahead for the Kansas City Chiefs (9-0) and the Carolina Panthers (5-3).

The Chiefs have had the very good fortune of going up against a bunch of below-average quarterbacks in recent weeks be it Tennessee's Ryan Fitzpatrick or Buffalo's Jeff Tuel but that ain't gonna be the case the rest of the way as Andy Reid's guys must deal with Denver's Peyton Manning twice, two matchups with San Diego slinger Philip Rivers and there's showdowns against Indianapolis' Andrew Luck and Washington's Robert Griffin III too ... so maybe the "hands of fate" are about to swing away from the Chiefs, eh?

In terms of the aforementioned Panthers, there's a team left for dead after a 1-3 SU (straight-up) start but a 25-point win in Minnesota, a 15-point home win against St. Louis, an 18-point win at Tampa Bay and last weekend's 24-point triumph over Atlanta has put QB Cam Newton front-and-center for a wild card berth while Carolina's just one full game back of muddling New Orleans (6-2).

If you check out the Carolina sked the rest of the way you'll notice road games in San Francisco this week and in New Orleans in Week 14 plus there's tough home tilts against New England, the New York Jets and New Orleans.
If Ron Rivera's club needs to win 10 games in all to clinch a playoff berth than gaining no worse than a split with the Saints is critical and something tells us Carolina's also gonna have to win inside the Georgia Dome in Week 17.

We'll see soon enough.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9

** UPSET SPECIAL ** UPSET SPECIAL
VIRGINIA TECH at MIAMI: Now that the U of M Hurricanes have been KO'd from the thinning ranks of the unbeaten, would expect HC Golden's club to sag again here following last weekend's 41-14 loss at mighty Florida State. The 'Canes simply can't trust QB Morris (two picks vs. the Seminoles) while we would expect angry V-Tech - off back-to-back ugly losses to Duke and Boston College - to step it up here with special teams score (or two) aiding the cause. It's Virginia Tech 26, Miami 24.

MISSOURI at KENTUCKY: Can't quibble with the fact the Mizzou Tigers have been one of America's "best bets" this year with spiffy 7-2 ATS (against the spread) mark but now HC Pinkel's guys are two-TD favorites for this SEC road game and that might be biting off more than they can chew. Will grab host Kentucky 'Cats here and count on QB Whitlow to make enough positive plays to make this a one-score game in the end. It's Missouri 30, Kentucky 24.

BYU at WISCONSIN: Sorry to sound like the proverbial broken record but we'll look for another close-fit game here as like the fact BYU Coogs know all about Wisky HC Andersen (he was Utah State's head coah from 2009-thru-2012) and so road pups make this scary proposition for the Badgers who have covered seven of their first eight games this year but need to squeak this one out late (dare we suggest overtime?). One major pro-BYU factor here is do-it-all QB Hill who enters play here with 2,019 yards passing and 12 TD strikes along with another 841 yards rushing (and 8 scores). Let's call it Wisconsin 27, BYU 24.

AUBURN at TENNESSEE: Let's get to back-to-back SEC showdowns next as the visiting Auburn Tigers have covered six consecutive games and how about the fact HC Malzahn's crew has allowed just 17, 10 and 3 points in three of its last four outings and now pressure Vols from start to finish. Maybe the 7 ½-to-8-point price seems a bit steep but consider that Tennessee ranks 99th nationally in rush defense (allows 201.7 ypg) and 86th in overall defense - so you're gonna trust these dudes with your hard-earned moolah? Auburn 32, Tennessee 17.

LSU at ALABAMA: You might have seen where the price tag for this high-profile tilt jumped from 'Bama minus 9 points to minus 12 faster than you could say Bear Bryant but consider that all the elite teams are trying to win by "a margin" these days and so it'll surprise no one if HC Saban's crew keeps its foot on the gas pedal here but this is all about how Crimson Tide defense handles recently shaky QB Mettenberger ... the Tide's allowed grand total of 26 points in last six games and we keep wondering wasn't this a "transition year" for the Tuscaloosa boys?  SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10

** PREFERRED PICK ** PREFERRED PICK **
ST. LOUIS at INDIANAPOLIS: Super-cool Colts QB Luck powered up his team's latest comeback win by throwing three TD passes to new favorite WR Hilton in the last quarter-plus of action in last Sunday Night's 27-24 win in Houston but $64,000 question is does it take Luck & Co. till their proverbial backs are to the wall to come roaring back again? Expect St. Loo RB Stacy (127 yards rushing last Sunday in tough 28-21 home loss to Tennessee) to grind out yards/clock here in closer-than-they-think Week 10 tilt in "Nap City". It's Indianapolis 27, St. Louis 23.

SEATTLE at ATLANTA: Maybe the country at large is "buying in" to what the here-and-now Seahawks have accomplished but check this out ... HC Carroll's club has won road games by 5, 3 (in OT), 12 and 5 points along with a six-point setback in Indianapolis and so it's not exactly as if NFC West club is smashing teams in their own backyards. Even tepid Falcons will get our nod here to slip under the price tag as Seattle QB Wilson airs another couple of picks and this one has wire job written all over it ... really! Seattle 23, Atlanta 21.

DETROIT at CHICAGO: Knee-jerk reaction is to believe that "short week" will hurt Bears bunch that comes off massive 27-20 win at Green Bay on MNF and best thing about that "W" was 18-play, 80-yard drive that chewed up nearly nine minutes in the final quarter ... but can RB Forte (125 yards rushing and 54 yards receiving against GB) work magic here in revenge tilt and what sort of condition with Chitown QB Cutler be in as he returns to action after month-long absence? Get our selection for this NFL Week 10 bash when you check in with us game-day morning. Okay?

CAROLINA at SAN FRANCISCO: Count 'em up ... the 49ers have won/covered their last five in a row while the Panthers enter this Bay Area bash riding a current four-game SU (straight-up) and ATS (against the spread) winning streak and don't you know SF defense has held last five foes to grand total of 61 points! Carolina QB Newton overcame two-INT opening half last week to help guide his guys to easy 34-10 win/cover against Atlanta and now looks to get those deep throws ironed out - watch WR LaFell here (6 catches for 74 yards last week) who could haunt Niners' secondary that hasn't really faced many great throwers lately.

  PRIMETIME POWER!
Let Jim Hurley bail you out with his Sunday Night Blaster

This a must-win game for the Cowboys to stay ahead in the weak NFC East, while the Saints want to get back on track after being upset by the Jets last Sunday (The Jets were my top Bliue Ribbon play by the way).  I've won my last 5 of my last 7 Sunday Night games and found the key to tonight's game too.

On Sunday Night, it's ...
DALLAS at NEW ORLEANS: It's safe to say that the high-octane Saints never did figure out the NY Jets defense in last weekend's 26-20 loss at MetLife Stadium - the 382 yards passing by N'Orleans slinger Brees was a tad misleading as he was sacked, harassed and generally hounded for much of that road game and now we'll see if the Saints - a nifty 17-4 ATS at home the past two-plus years - can lay the lumber on TD underdog Cowboys here. Get the Side & Totals winner at 1-800-323-4453!

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11

MIAMI at TAMPA BAY: The whole OL Incognito mess figures to weigh down the Dolphins all week long and so maybe this is the time the TB Bucs (0-8) get their first win of the year ... will RB James (158 yards rushing) be able to slice-and-dice the Fish defense here?
