Lions Seahawks Monday Night Preview

ESPN SHOCKED TO FIND DETROIT AND SEATTLE A COMBINED 1-5 ENTERING MONDAY NIGHT MEETING

This was supposed to be an intriguing battle featuring a potential playoff spoiler visiting the two-time defending NFC champions. Instead, ESPN will be showcasing a pair of early disappointments who can't afford to lose another game this early in the season.

At least THAT might create playoff style intensity when the 0-3 Detroit Lions visit the 1-2 Seattle Seahawks in the final pro game of the weekend.

Both teams are obviously better than those records. But, is either capable of getting back to preseason expectations? Can Detroit play spoiler as a Wildcard out of the NFC North? Is Seattle's reign atop the conference over now that Green Bay has taken such command? Let's run through JIM HURLEY'S key indicator stats to see what we can learn about those questions and tonight's pointspread possibilities.

Won-Lost Records (Strength of Schedule)
Detroit: 0-3 (lost at San Diego, at Minnesota, and vs. Denver)
Seattle: 1-2 (lost at St. Louis, at Green Bay, won vs. Chicago)

A truly brutal early season schedule for the Lions. They knew it was coming...but didn't seem as well-prepared as they needed to be. The offense has been helpless on the ground. The defense, as you'll see in a moment, hasn't been up to the challenge. Their ceiling this year maybe "7-9 type team who can beat anybody on any given day" rather than "10-6 Wildcard entry." Seattle is 1-1-1 at the end of regulation because the Rams' game went overtime. But, they lost stats big on that afternoon, and the Rams were then awful the next two weeks. For now...this is not a 13-3 type juggernaut. More like the Wildcard performance people were expecting from Detroit.

Yards-Per-Play
Detroit: 4.9 on offense, 6.0 on defense
Seattle: 5.2 on offense, 5.2 on defense

You can see how badly Detroit's been outclassed by its schedule. So...yes, it's bad luck to have such a difficult draw. But, that's a lack of competitiveness at the point of attack shining through. Seattle is break-even vs. a schedule that should have provided a better differential. Hosting helpless Chicago cancels out visiting potent Green Bay. Super Bowl contenders should win stats vs. the Rams. Here we have confirmation that both teams have issues entering October.

Turnover Differential
Detroit: -2
Seattle: +1

Matthew Stafford showed in the prior coaching regime that he was very mistake-prone when trying to force things. A newly successful conservative approach helped fix that last season. But, now, with no running game and a tough slate...he's back to forcing things and making mistakes. Seattle is likely to win this category Monday unless their swagger and hunger are totally gone. A definite question based on what we've seen so far. Does Seattle still have that "go for the jugular" attitude you need to take down a lion?

Market Performance
Detroit: 0-3 ATS
Seattle: 1-2 ATS

Two overrated teams...and the Lions have missed the last two weeks by more than a touchdown. As we said at the top, both have been disappointments however you slice it. This expresses that reality in market terms. The Lions and Seahawks are 1-5 straight up and against the spread. The only win/cover came against the worst team in the NFL, Chicago (when starting Clausen).

Current Line: Seattle by 10, total of 43

Seattle is still getting a lot of market respect. They shut out the Bears 26-0 last week, which makes a spread like -10 seen manageable. The Lions probably aren't going to just roll over and take their medicine though. Not with 0-4 staring them in the face. It's now or never for Detroit in terms of the 2015 playoffs. And, a now or never effort could be enough to get the money against the slow-starting Seahawks.
