OAKLAND A’S VISIT CINCINNATI FOR A FASCINATING AND FAST TWO-GAME SET
In what amounts to a quick overnight trip, the Oakland A’s will play the Cincinnati Reds twice within 24 hours Tuesday Night and Wednesday afternoon in a fascinating Interleague match-up of playoff contenders. Both teams are in great shape to reach the postseason. Yet, both are showing signs that they may not matter once they get to the playoffs:
Cincinnati is a dismal 18-30 against opponents with a record of .500 or better after dropping two of three at home to St. Louis this past weekend…and three of four against the Los Angeles Dodgers on the road before that. The Reds are great at squashing bad teams. There won’t be any bad teams in the playoffs!
Oakland just dropped two of three at home to Texas, and is a disappointing 26-27 against teams at .500 or better this season. Tough to have big dreams against the AL East winner or Detroit if you’re just a coin flip against all decent teams you play.
Will either the A’s or the Reds show us something special in this very quick two-game set? Let’s take a look at the probable pitchers…
Oakland…Straily: 6.5, 4.41 ERA, 1.20 WHIP
Cincinnati…Latos: 10-3, 3.38 ERA, 1.28 WHIP
Straily continues to be a very inconsistent pitcher. You can see that with his poor ERA (for a pitcher who gets to throw home games in a great pitcher’s park) and his decent WHIP. Basically, he either throws a gem or gets rocked. A road game in a bandbox could prove problematic for him. But he is stepping down to face the inferior league…and an opponent that’s struggled vs. quality all season.
Latos has been the most reliable of Cincinnati’s starters, though he’s not really producing at an “ace” caliber level this season. His game log shows that he typically outclasses lesser opponents, but he can have trouble vs. quality. That’s the Reds in a nutshell this season…and Latos is a classic example. Big test here for him against an AL playoff team.
Oakland…Colon: 14-3 2.50 ERA, 1.12 WHIP
Cincinnati…Bailey: 6-10, 3.55 ERA, 1.14 WHIP
Colon is having such an unbelievable season that it can be hard to handicap him. Everyone’s been thinking “he can’t possibly keep this going” for months…yet he’s just as effective now as he was early in the season. How can THIS 40-YEAR OLD GUY be as good as Clayton Kershaw?! If you believe the numbers, you take Colon vs. everybody. Colon and his teammates had to be very relieved that he didn’t receive any additional suspensions for his involvement with Biogenesis.
Homer Bailey is an amazing story. He has no-hit potential whenever he takes the field. Yet, he only has a 6-10 record this season despite pitching for a likely Wildcard team. His WHIP is almost the same as Colon’s…yet his ERA is a run worse while pitching in a league without the DH. Bailey stated publicly several weeks ago that he’s having trouble pitching out of the stretch. If you get runners on against him, you’ll score. If not…you may be sweating a no-hitter late in the game!
