Yankees/Dodgers Preview

SUDDENLY, THE YANKEES/DODGERS SERIES IS HUGE WITH MAJOR STORIES BREAKING FOR BOTH TEAMS

There’s so much history with the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers that any Interleague meeting between the is going to be something special. The Dodgers and the Yankees…that meant something to your father and grandfather just as much as it does to you.

This week’s renewal of what used to be a subway showdown has suddenly BLOWN UP into something very special.

*Derek Jeter has returned to the Yankees lineup, and hit a home run in his first at bat Sunday vs. Tampa Bay!

*Alfonso Soriano was recently acquired to help shore up the offense. He struggled in his first two games, but then exploded with a home run and a game winning single in that Sunday victory.

*Yasiel Puig and the Dodgers are still running roughshod over the National League. They just took three of four from Cincinnati to extend a winning tear that goes back a full month.

*Both the Yankees and Dodgers are in intense playoff races. New York is in a killer division, and they must try to catch Baltimore, Boston, and Tampa Bay from behind if they want to play in October. The Dodgers were so bad in the early stages of the season that they’re still far from a sure thing to make the playoffs even though they’ve been dominating their league for weeks.

THESE GAMES MATTER…and they matter amidst some celebrity story-lines.

Oh way…it gets better…the Dodgers will be throwing their two best pitchers in this quick two-game set! Let’s run through the mound match-ups for games we’re sure you’ll be watching very closely.

TUESDAY’S PITCHERS

NY Yankees… Pettitte: 7-8, 4.39 ERA, 1.36 WHIP

LA Dodgers…Greinke: 8-3, 3.49 ERA, 1.27 WHIP

Pettitte has struggled badly much of the season, but he’ll occasionally throw a real gem that helps keep his ERA under 5.00. His last time out against the Texas Rangers was one of those instances…though everyone’s been shutting down the slumping Rangers offense lately.

Greinke seemed to be dealing with nerves early in the season…then came back too soon from his collarbone injury. He's found his old form in his last four outings, allowing only five earned runs in 29 innings. It’s a recent form mismatch to a degree…which means Jeter and Soriano will have to step up again for the New York offense.

WEDNESDAY’S PITCHERS

NY Yankees…Kuroda: 10-6, 2.51 ERA, 1.04 WHIP

LA Dodgers… Kershaw: 10-6, 1.96 ERA, 0.87 WHIP

Kuroda continues to have an amazing season. Those are fantastic numbers for an American League pitcher (dealing with the DH) who has to pitch so often against AL East offenses in an unbalanced schedule. It’s one of the most under-reported stories of the year, because the media’s been focused on Yankees injuries rather than what the guys who were actually playing were doing.

Kershaw is the most dominant pitcher in the National League, and gets to throw his home games in a great pitcher’s park. We have a classic pitcher’s duel set up here…which means we may see one of the lowest Las Vegas Over/Unders of the whole season. Can you still take the Under at that low total? What a great way to cap off the 2013 renewal of this longtime franchise rivalry!
