Yankees-Diamondbacks Series Preview
SHORTHANDED YANKEES HOLDING THEIR OWN TWO WEEKS INTO THE SEASON
The New York Yankees have to be pleased with a 6-5 record two weeks into the 2013 season. They host Arizona in a three-game Interleague series that begins Tuesday Night in the Bronx with a chance to extend that winning start.
Why should Yankees fans be pleased with 6-5 through 11 games?
The schedule was pretty tough. The Yankees opened the season with the Boston Red Sox, who currently lead the AL East. The Yankees then went to Detroit, who led the AL Central entering the new week. This past weekend, the Yanks hosted Baltimore...who are in the mix of the AL East race despite playing 9 of their first 12 games on the road. The shorthanded Yanks were thrown in the deep end out of the gate and are doing a good job of treading water.
The pitching is still solid, and C.C. Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, and Andy Pettitte are capable of doing a lot of heavy lifting as long as they stay healthy.
The offense has been lighting up the scoreboard despite facing some good pitchers...and despite playing in chilly temperatures.
Batting Average: #2 in the American League
On-Base Percentage: #2 in the American League
Slugging Percentage: #1 in the American League
Hey injured guys...stay away a while longer! That's a very strong opening considering the context. Put that production with effective pitching...and the Yankees seem capable of contending until Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez are able to return.

Arizona: vs. St. Louis (3), at Milwaukee (3), vs. Pittsburgh (3), vs. LA Dodgers (3)
Yankees: vs. Boston (3), at Detroit (3), at Cleveland (2), vs. Baltimore (3)
We haven't talked about Arizona yet. They're off to a great start themselves, sitting at 8-4 entering this series. You can see above though that nine of their 12 games have been at home...and the only road series came against a disappointing Milwaukee team that's off to a very slow start. This D-Backs/Yankees series provides an interesting test for BOTH teams regarding what we can expect the rest of this month and through the first half of the season.
TUESDAY'S PITCHERS (stats from 2012)
Arizona ...McCarthy: 8-6, 3.34 ERA, 1.25 WHIP (for Oakland)
Yankees ... Nova: 12-8, 5.02 ERA, 1.47 WHIP
This is only the second start of the season for Nova. He struggled badly in his only outing, continuing the disappointing trend from the second half of 2012. This is Arizona's best shot to steal a game because Nova is the weakest link in the Yankees rotation by a good bit.
WEDNESDAY'S PITCHERS (stats from 2012)
Arizona ...Miley: 16-11, 3.33 ERA, 1.18 WHIP
Yankees ... Sabathia: 15-6, 3.38 ERA, 1.14 WHIP
Great pitcher's duel here...meaning you might want to think about the Under. Sabathia in particular is very tough to hit if you haven't seen him before. Miley showed that tendency last year as well. Very impressive WHIPs in the stat line...and two pitchers who combined to win more than 30 games.
THURSDAY'S PITCHERS (stats from 2012)
Arizona ...Corbin: 6-8, 4.54 ERA, 1.33 WHIP
Yankees ... Hughes: 16-13, 4.23 ERA, 1.27 WHIP
Corbin is a lefty who the Yankees haven't seen before. But, he didn't exactly mow down the NL last year in what amounted to a half season of action. At least the ballpark will help him. Hughes was an innings muncher last year...but he was prone to allowing big hits because his ERA is worse than his WHIP would have suggested. The Diamondbacks are fortune to miss both Kuroda and Pettitte in this series.
