The Longest Day
Day One of the Breeders Cup: John Piesen's TOP HORSE WINS the FIRST 6 Races!!! Click here to win
THE LONGEST DAY
No Game on Dude. No Will Take Charge. No Wise Dan. No Wicked Strong.
No Beholder. No Palace Malice. No American Pharoah. No Magician.
No Midnight Lucky.
Does it matter that these stars will miss the Breeders' Cup?
Not really. Although many, if not most, of the 13 Cup races feature no-name horses, it's still the Breeders' Cup, and for the bettors, it means big fields and big prices. That's why you need to check out my selections online, and on the John Piesen Hot Line at 1-888-612-2283. And tell your friends.
Whether you are on-sight at Santa Anita, at a simulcast site, or watching on TV in the comfort of your living room, you are guaranteed to have a good time. Even though you might be physically and mentally exhausted by the time they run the Classic.
Dating back to the inaugural Classic in 1984 when outsider Wild Again. ridden masterfully by a then unknown rider named Pat Day, beat Gate Dancer and Slew of Gold in a thrilling finish.
Who knows if this Classic -- would you believe 30 years later -- will produce such a finish?
But I'm thinking, like in '84, this Classic will produce big prices. At least I'm hoping so because I'm going with a double-digit horse to upset the Big Three of Shared Belief, Bayern and California Chrome.
Yes, I may be a fool, or at least foolhardy, since according to knowledgable Daily Racing Form columnist Brad Free, Santa Anita has two kinds of tracks -- a speed-favoring track, and a really speed-favoring track.
I'm taking nothing away from the Big Three. They all are superstars, and all figure to run well over what I'm sure will be -- like Free says -- a speed favoring Anita strip, but, like in so many Classics, I'm looking for acloser to get the money, and at a price.
Many of the Cup races feature European horses, and the Euros traditionally race well in the Cup. After all, their connections wouldn't go to the expense of coming to the U.S. if they didn't feel they were capable of winning.
It's the presence of the Euros that make the BC the event that it is, but it also makes many of the races inscrutable. For every Wise Dan there is a Goldikova.
So let's take a look at Saturday's nine Breeders' Cup races:
Angela Renee and Conquest Eclipse, off their one-two finish in a Grade One over the track, will be the favorites. But trainers Pletcher and Casse have poor Breeders' Cup records. Casse is known as the Todd Pletcher of Canada.
By the Moon exitsa huge victory in the Frizette at a $50 mutuel, but will need a miracle to win from post 12.
This may not be the best of BC Juvenile Fillies races. There is not a filly in the field with a 100 Beyer. In fact, there is not a 90 Beyer in the group.
Rare to see the black Phipps silks in a Breeders' Cup, especially one on the west coast, so don't overlook Abaco. She'll be the one closing fastest and widest.
Stephanie's Kitten, an in-form closer from the Ramseys, is one of 11 BC calls for Johnny V. Castellano and Rosario have 10.
Euro star Dank won this race last year as the favorite, but her two races this year have been sub-standard.
FILLY& MARE SPRINT
The Ortiz brothers go head-to-head on stone closers Artemis Agrotera, a New York-bred, and Sweet Reason, but they will have to come a long way to catch Judy the Beauty and Leigh Court. Thisrace will tell us if there is a speed bias.
Smith choosesJudy the Beauty over Better Lucky, an in-form Godolphin closer, and Living the Life, who goes synthetic to dirt.
This race is so wide-open that we have a 9-2 morning line favorite -- No Nay Never. He's 4-1-0 from five starts, and Dettori rides for his buddy Wes Ward from post 14.
Ambitious Brew. 3-1-0 from four starts over the track, and gets Smith.
Undrafted, owned byDenver Broncos star Wes Welker, completes uncoupled entry from Ward.
With American Pharoah out, the Toddster gets to run the first two choices -- Daredevil and Carpe Diem. Both must overcome wide posts. The Beyer boys will love Carpe Diem, who posted a 107 winning the Breeders' Futurity.
Souper Colossal was 3-for-3 at Monmouth, each time as the favorite, and with escalating Beyer numbers.
Texas Red raced wide for third to American Pharoah at this distance.
Magician, who won this race last year, is a late scratch, leaving Main Sequence, a Euro, who is 3-for-3 in this country, all in photos, the likely favorite in a wide-open race.
Hardest Core, who beat Magician in the Arlington Million, has won four straight for his hard-scabble connections. Would be a great story.
Imagining, flying the Phipps colors, will be the one to catch with new rider Talamo.
Bob Baffert holds strong hand with Secret Circle, last year's winner, and Indianapolis.
Lady trainers Kathy Ritvo and Linda Rice run major players Fast Anna and Palace, respectively.
Beware Rich Tapestry. a 6-year-old gelding who won a stake over the track in his U.S. debut.
The race cries for a longshot winner.
The absence of Wise Dan leaves Euro star Toronado as the favorite in -- you guessed it -- another wide-open race.
Seek Again blew the start in the Shadwell Turf Mile, and was beaten mere four lengths by Wise Dan.
Obviously obviously is the horse for the course, and mayget loose on the lead.
This race may setlle Horse of the Year. Owners say that if California Chrome runs poorly, he will be retired on the spot.
We will find out if the unbeaten Shared Again, ownedby sports talk host Jim Rome, is a superstar. Can he get a mile and a quarter with a target on his back?
Majestic Harbor will closing widest and fastest. He freaked three races back at the distance over the track.
Cigar Street, owned by NBA star Rashard Lewis, is 5-for-8, gets Johnny V and an inside post.
Imperative figures to improve with Dettori.
Thanks for tuning in. Have an enjoyable and profitable Breeders' Cup, go Hogs, and see you back here next Friday.
