Kelso’s Advanced Sports Betting: Philadelphia Eagles Turning Into a Turkey
It’s fitting that the Philadelphia Eagles kick off Thanksgiving NFL this year on the road against the Detroit Lions. The Eagles season may end up being a real turkey! They were supposed to be the hot new thing in the NFL. Las Vegas was pricing them like champions when the season was starting. Instead…
*The Eagles are just 4-6 entering the holiday
*Sam Bradford has been a disaster at quarterback in this system
*Mark Sanchez has been a disaster as a backup QB in this system
*Chip Kelly’s name is back in the rumor mill at major college programs
This was supposed to be a system that couldn’t fail. Now, the team will have to close very strong to keep 2015 from seeming like a big failure.
At least it’s a matchup with the lowly Lions greeting the team Thursday. A win here, and the Eagles move to 5-6 with a shot to chase down the NY Giants (who play Washington Sunday) at the top of the division. It’s possible that an 8-8 record wins the NFC East. Philly can get there from here with a schedule that looks like this:
Thursday: at Detroit
December 6: at New England (ouch)
December 13: vs. Buffalo (will be favored)
December 20: vs. Arizona (ouch again!)
December 26: vs. Washington (will be favored)
January 3: at the NY Giants (might be for the division crown!)
It’s bad luck that New England and Arizona (possibly the Super Bowl teams) are still ahead. But, going 8-8 is still possible if they lose those games and win everything else. On the other hand, a loss to Detroit makes the record 4-7…and that’s pretty much the ball game. The players are likely to throw in the towel (if they haven’t already) on this overrated system and a coach who’s probably much better suited to the colleges. It’s not like Kelly’s players loved the man entering the season! They just thought his system would make them rich.
So…I encourage you students here in my College of Advanced Sports Betting and Handicapping to watch this early game very closely. What you learn could pay dividends repeatedly in the final month of the season. And, that’s true for BOTH teams. Detroit’s started playing with some fire again. If they get to 4-7 with a win…maybe they provide value until they run out of gas again.
Has Philadelphia already thrown in the towel? That is certainly possible given how awful they looked this past Sunday against Tampa Bay. Amazingly, a ROOKIE quarterback led what was supposed to be an expansion caliber team to 521 total yards and 45 points. Jameis Winston and his teammates just marched up and down the field all day against what had been an elite defense. Winston looked better Sunday than ANY Eagles quarterback has looked in a regular season game since Kelly joined the franchise.
The most important lesson in today’s discussion I believe is that there are no shortcuts to success in the NFL. Far too many people fell in love with Philadelphia as a potential shortcut…dreaming that a team could just install a gimmick system and rule the world. Things were sluggish last season. A change in quarterback was supposed to help…even if it was to a mediocre veteran (at best) who wasn’t well-suited to the style!
*Modern defenses are physical and athletic
*Modern defensive braintrusts can figure out how to disrupt any attack
*College head coaches are outmanned in the NFL unless they have great assistants
*Asking a quarterback to run for yardage is very dangerous because of injury potential. This system needs a quarterback who can use his legs. That type of quarterback is an injury magnet.
NFL defensive coordinators spent the offseason figuring out how to contain…and even attack…this system. Nobody was scared when slow-footed Sam Bradford was put at the helm. Philadelphia’s penchant for running up the score on vanilla defenses featuring backups during the Preseason deluded the market into thinking something special was happening. Market lessons for everyone.
