Does Power Struggle Between Ryan And Jets General Manager Doom Team Before Season Begins?

Dolphins, Titans, Jaguars Will Begin NFL Season With Quarterbacks That Can't Cut It

By Kelso Sturgeon

The traditional soap opera continues in the New York Jets pre-season training camp and it has all the characters to doom the team's season before it begins. Things are so bad, the 6-10 record the team turned in 2012 may be as good as it gets in this circus. Yes, it is all about who should be the starting quarterback-veteran Mark Sanchez or rookie Geno Smith-but the real problem is between head coach veteran head coach Rex Ryan and rookie general manager John Idzik.

Ryan says it should be Sanchez; Idzik says it should be Geno Smith, the first player he drafted in his new position. Right now the infighting between these two is a moot point because Smith is suffering from an ankle injury and that means Sanchez will start Saturday at home against Jacksonville. It also means he will then start the third and most important game of the pre-season, setting him up to be in that same spot when the Jets open the season at home against Tampa Bay.

Seldom has a quarterback who did not start game three of the NFL pre-season start game one of the regular season. Game three is the dress performance for the real thing-a fine-tuning and polishing moment. Of course, Idzik could over-rule Ryan and start the quarterback he believes will lead the team to the promised land.

Common sense and reality are obviously on vacation in the Jets' training camp and nothing good can come of it.

Ryan's contempt for Idzik's interference surfaced in all its ugliness this past week when he noted Smith's performance in practice-where he threw four interceptions-was "brutal". If that is not throwing someone under the bus, I do not know what is.

The impact of this is going to be far-reaching, with Ryan beginning the season knowing he won't be back next year, or even if he will make it through the full 2013 season. As for Sanchez, he also knows he is not in Idzik's future plans.

It takes great skill to play the quarterback position but ability does not matter when one knows he does not have the confidence of the front office. Successful quarterbacks need coaches and management that tells them, "you it". They need a vote of confidence and without it, half their time is spent playing and the other half looking over their shoulder.

A mess? Really?

Teams Lacking QB Going Nowhere

I don't like to be prematurely judgmental but one cannot lie to one's self when it comes to betting money and keeping score with it. I have handicapped and scouted football for many years and starting quarterbacks are going to bury three NFL teams this season.

  • The Tennessee Titans are going nowhere with Jake Locker at quarterback.

  • The Jacksonville Jaguars have three quarterbacks on the depth chart-Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne and Matt Kafka-and all are just good backups.

  • It may surprise you, but I don't think Miami Dolphins quarterback has what it takes to get it done in the NFL and the team is going to be shocked when it finally figures it out.

College Season Begins in Just 13 Days

While the focus has been on the NFL pre-season and Major League Baseball, I am also deeply into handicapping the first weekend of the football season. College football begins Thursday, August 29, with seven games. Here they are with their betting lines and TV information. Home teams in CAPS.
