While handicappers focus much of their time and attention on the coming National Football League 65-game pre-season which begins in four weeks with the August 5 Hall of Fame Game from Canton, OH, between the Arizona Cardinals and the New Orleans Saints many are also working overtime to get ready for another challenging college season.

NFL teams report to camp in just 16 days and most of the colleges in 23 days. Football is here and bettors will have the opportunity to wager on the usual 32 pro teams and an additional 124 college teams, up from 120 last year, with Texas-San Antonio, Texas State, Massachusetts and South Alabama added to the NCAA Division I mix.

The first night of college football will fall on Thursday, August 30, and the schedule will offer 18 games on that night-many of them on national television-and highlighted by such matchups as South Carolina at Vanderbilt (ESPN) and Washington State at BYU (ESPN).

The next night will be a very attractive TV doubleheader-N.C. State vs. Tennessee in Atlanta (ESPNU) and Boise State at Michigan State (ESPN). The Saturday schedule kicks off from Dublin, Ireland, where Navy meets Notre Dame on CBS. Highlight of the day will be the Michigan vs. Alabama matchup from Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX.

It's here folks, the 2012 football season, and it's time to get ready for it.

In studying the colleges, be aware there are 28 new coaches in place at various schools, including Urban Meyer at Ohio State, Mike Leach at Washington State and Charlie Weis at Kansas.

Weis Figures To Be Bust At Kansas

Meyer, who has a 104-23 lifetime record and two national championships under his belt (at Florida in 2006 and 2008), and Leach, who proved his offensive genius while going 84-43 at Texas Tech, almost guarantee success at their new schools.

As for Weis, the jury is in and says he will bring little to the Kansas program, already the worst in the Big 12. Weis went 35-27 at Notre Dame, did a brief stint as offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, and ran the offense for a 6-6 Florida team last season. My money says the Jayhawks got suckered in this move. A man who struggled to win in South Bend has little chance for success in Lawrence.

The four newcomers to Division I football has been brought to the big time by two names football fans know well. Head coach at Texas-San Antonio is Larry Coker, who went 60-15 and won a national championship at Miami, is building that program from scratch. The man in charge at Texas State is Dennis Franchione who has gone 19-15 in San Marcus since being brought in to take the Bobcats to the next level.  He has a lifetime record of 193-107 and previously served successfully at New Mexico, TCU, Alabama and Texas A&M.

Southern California is the 4-1 favorite to win the national championship and the Trojans superstar quarterback Matt Barkley who threw for 3,528 yards and 39 touchdowns, with just seven interceptions for a 10-2 team in 2011, is the 4-1 favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. USC returns nine offensive and eight defensive starters from last year.
