Nebraska, Utah Get Reality Check That Grass Is Not Always Green In New Conference
Are 1-3 Eagles, 2-2 Steelers Already Done?
By Kelso Sturgeon
It was another standout Sunday of winning in the NFL and made up for a subpar Saturday where logic took a vacation, a fact illustrated by the numbers that saw underdogs go 27-13-2 against the number. Translated, that means college favorites lost 67% of the time. Coming off a week in which the 'dogs went 10-5-1 in the NFL favorites stood 8-6-1 going into the Monday night game.
Highlight of Sunday was another 50-unit winner in my NFL Game of the Week as the Washington Redskins (-3) knocked off the St. Louis Rams, 17-10, in a game that was never as close as the final score. My Chairman's Club took down the money with a 25-unit bet on the New Orleans Saints (-8) in their 23-10 at Jacksonville and with pride, my Best Bets Club won with Houston and Detroit while losing with Oakland and pushed its record for the past three weeks to 18-4-1.
I am releasing a 25-unit Chairman's Club play on tonight's nationally televised Indianapolis Colts at Tampa Bay Buccaneers game and a 5-unit play on the total for my Best Bets Club. Both winners are available on this site and toll free at 1-800-755-2255 and all major credit cards are accepted.
Your best bet-and I mean best bet in the most absolute way-would be to join my Best Bets Club for the entire college and NFL seasons for just $199, charged to your major credit card and start winning tonight. Also included in membership is the rest of the baseball season right through the World Series-and, yes, I have crushed the entire baseball season.
There were many important lessons learned this week, both in the colleges and the NFL.
In the colleges we saw Nebraska, Utah and Colorado exposed in their new conferences and discovered South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Florida and Penn State are just pretenders. On the plus side, Kansas State (5-0) has emerged as a team to be feared after wins at Miami and at home against nationally-ranked Baylor and that Clemson (5-0) is the real deal after a 23-3 win at Virginia Tech.
One can add nothing to what Alabama, a 38-10 winner at Florida, Wisconsin, a 48-17 home winner over Nebraska and LSU, a 35-7 home winner over Kentucky do on the field. All three are awesome.
Oh, yes, let us not forget Ohio State, a 10-7 home loser to Michigan State, is showing just how terrible things can become when you get caught cheating, cheating and cheating, and start paying the penalty for it. The secret to winning at the highest level of the game: Don't Get Caught".
How Can Eagles Be 1-3, Steelers 2-2?
The Philadelphia Eagles began this season favored to win the National Football Conference championship and were the 6-1 choice behind 9-2 New England to win the Super Bowl. What's happened? How can this very talented team by 1-3? What about the 2-2 Pittsburgh Steelers and the 2-2 New York Jets.
Is hell beginning to freeze over?
First, the Eagles, who have proved they just can't finish-can't seal the deal. They have been outscored 36-0 in the fourth quarter of their last three games and, no surprise, lost them all. They had a 23-3 third quarter lead over the San Francisco 49ers Sunday and lost, 24-23, getting outscored 21-0 heading to the money.
The offense in Philadelphia works most of the time but relies too much on quarterback Michael Vick who accounted for 491 yards of the Eagles 513 yards off offense in Sunday's loss as Vick had a career high 416 yards passing and another 75 yards rush.
The issues to be solved: A one-man show can win the colleges but it cannot win in the NFL. While Philadelphia seemed to make several positive defensive changes for the 2011 season, it has not worked and nothing illustrates that more than not being able to finish out a game. It's nothing short of disgraceful for a good team to blow a 23-3 third-quarter lead.
The Eagles are a 3-point favorite at 3-1 Buffalo Sunday.
Steelers Look Old, Worn Out Already
As suspect as have become the Eagles, the Pittsburgh Steelers have even more questions and while I do not want to rile the world's many Steelers fans, this is not the same team to which we are accustomed. Their offensive line has never recovered from the beating it took in that season opening 35-7 blowout loss at Baltimore and permitted five sacks of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in Sunday's 17-10 loss at Houston. Even more telling is the fact the Steelers have turned the ball over 11 times this season-second behind the Kansas City Chiefs in this department.
There are now words to describe the ass-kicking the Steelers absorbed at Baltimore in game one and they showed its impact in their second game, a very unimpressive 28-0 home win over Seattle and then a lackluster 23-20 win at winless Indianapolis.
Against Houston the Steelers looked old, tired, slow and simply not into it.
One can't draw a final conclusion after just four games but Pittsburgh needs to pick it up, or else.
Pittsburgh is an 8-point home favorite over Tennessee this week.
Why Does Romo Smile After Every Interception
This is not a complaint, since I have won back-to-back bets against the Dallas Cowboys the past two weeks, this past Sunday with the Detroit Lions (+2 ½) in their stunning come-from-behind 34-30 win and last Monday night with the Washington Redskins (+4) cover in an 18-16 loss. But can anyone tell me why Dallas quarterback Tony Romo smile after each interception?
He had three of them Sunday, two returned 34 and 56 yards for touchdowns, and he smiled, as he has done all season, after each one. Maybe, it's just his subconscious way of dealing with the bad?
In the process, the Detroit Lions roared back from a 24-point deficit take a 34-30 lead with 2-yard touchdown with 1:39 left to play.
Turn out the lights, the party's over.
This is a very average Dallas football team and, as I have said since August, the Cowboys will be lucky to better last year's 6-10 mark.
Dallas has this week off to get ready for its next outing, a walk-in-the-park trip to Foxborough and an encounter with the New England Patriots who are 63-11 at Gillette Stadium over the past 8 ¼ seasons.
Cornhuskers Did Not Rule The Day
The Nebraska Cornhuskers got a rude awakening in their first Big Ten Conference game as the powerful Wisconsin Badgers (-9½) crushed them 48-17 in a national embarrassment before a nationally televised Saturday night "showcase" game.
It had to be quite a let-down for a Nebraska team that at the end of last season left the Big 12 Conference for the Big Ten. It left because it did not see many chances of getting past either Oklahoma or Texas in the conference championship game each season. A loss in that spot meant no BCS bowl and no chance to play for the national championship.
For the record, Nebraska met Texas six times in the last 10 years and went 0-6. The Cornhuskers were 1-6 in the past 10 years against Oklahoma. Nebraska sought greener pastures after last year's 23-20 loss to Oklahoma in the title game-a loss which followed by one year its 13-12 loss to Texas in this game the season before.
The feeling in Lincoln was that Nebraska had the firepower to dominate the Big Ten and get to the big one.
That's the truth, like it or not.
How about Utah which left the Mountain West Conference to go to the PAC-10? The Utes have played two conference games and lost them both. First it was a 23-14 loss at USC and then last week a 31-14 loss to Washington in a game in which Utah was a 10-point favorite.
Colorado also moved to the PAC-10 after last season, getting away from the Big 12 where it had become a doormat. After two games in its new conference Colorado looks like the same doormat, losing at home to California, 33-30, and last week at home to Washington State, 31-27.
Same team, same result.
That's all for today.
