By Kelso Sturgeon

I am pleased to report I kicked off the always treacherous National Football League pre-season with a winning night that was highlighted by the explosive performance of the New England Patriots who buried the Jacksonville Jaguars, 47-12 as a 10-unit play. I went 1-1 Thursday, losing a 3-unit play on the San Diego Chargers.

The facts and figures were quite clear on the first five games of the pre-season. Nobody played much defense and games that carried over/under figures ranging from 33 ½ to 35 finished the night averaging 41.0 points. That unexpectedly high number meant the 'over' prevailed by a 4-1 margin as each game produced offensive efforts averaging an unusual, if not stunning, 653.8 yards.
Underdogs covered by a 3-2 margin, with Seattle and Arizona winning in outright upsets.

I am releasing but a single game tonight, the nationally televised Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Kansas City Chiefs, as a 10-unit play. The game will be on FOX and will kickoff at 8:05 Eastern Time. It is available on this site for $15, or free as part of my Early Bird Football Package.

Coaching Factor In Tonight's Games

As we pointed out in yesterday's column one of the foundation factors of pre-season handicapping is how each coach approaches these games. We can get an indication of that from past records, which reveal whether they try to win them or simply don't care much one way or the other.

Here is a rundown of the coaches in tonight's games, plus a few additional comments.

Cincinnati Bengals at Detroit Lions
Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis is 17-16 in the pre-season and is 3-6 in the first game his team played each year. Rookie Andy Dalton (TCU) will start tonight for the Bengals and the first team will play about 1 ½ quarters.

Detroit coach Jim Swartz is 6-2 in the pre-season and 1-1 in his first game. Swartz has been not said how long his starters will play.

Miami Dolphins  at Atlanta Falcons
Miami coach Tony Sparano is 9-3 in the pre-season and 2-1 in his first game. He has said little about his plans tonight.

Atlanta coach Mike Smith is 6-6 in the pre-season and 1-2 in opening games. He has said less about his game plans than has Sparano.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Washington Redskins
Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin is 13-4 in the pre-season and 4-1 in the opening game. He said his starters will play no more than 10 plays tonight.

Washington coach Mike Shanahan is 43-21 in pre-season games and 11-5 in openers. Rex Grossman will start at quarterback tonight while proclaimed starter John Beck will sit it out with a groin injury.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Kansas City Chiefs
Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris is 3-5 in the pre-season and 0-2 in opening games. Starting quarterback Josh Freeman will play from 1 to ½ quarters. He will be followed by back-up Josh Johnson for a half-quarter, with third-stringer Rudy Carpenter playing the second half.

Kansas City coach Todd Haley is 1-7 in the pre-season and 0-2 in opening games. He has said little about his game plans.

San Francisco 49ers at New Orleans Saints
San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh is in his first season as an NFL head coach. He coached at Stanford before taking the 49ers job. He says his starters will play about 20 snaps.

New Orleans coach Sean Payton is 11-10 in the pre-season and 3-3 in openers. He has said little about his game plans tonight.
