Kelso's Early College Top 10

KELSO'S EARLY COLLEGE TOP 10

My preparation for the college football continues and for the first time since analyzing each of the 123 NCAA Division 1 teams I am ready to release my pre-season Top 10 and declare with confidence one of these teams will win the national championship. It should come as no surprise to anyone that Oregon and Alabama are ranked 1-2.

However, it may come as a surprise to you that 30-1 Texas A&M, which fields its best team in years, has a legitimate chance to win the national championship.
Also, I noted last week that Rice and Kansas State will be two of the most-underrated teams in college football at the beginning of the season. Further study says you can add Arizona State to that group.

Here is my college top ten, with comments about each, followed by the odds each is to win it all.

Kelso's Pre-Season College Top 10

  1. OREGON--Loaded on both sides of ball and has best 1-2 offensive punch in college football with junior quarterback Darron Thomas (2,881 yards passing, 30 touchdowns) and junior running back LaMichael James (1,731 yards rushing, 21 touchdowns). Will get acid test in first game of the season when it meets LSU at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX.

  2. ALABAMA--Has most overall talent and depth of any team in college football. Will just plug in new players who may well be better than those they will be replacing. First test comes in second game of season when Tide plays at Penn State.

  3. OKLAHOMA--Loaded and has blue-chip quarterback in junior Landry Jones who completed 405-of-617 passes for 4,718 yards and 38 touchdowns in leading Sooners to 12-2 season. Sooner defense is capable of being one of ten best in country.

  4. LSU--Tigers return eight offensive and seven defensive starters from last year's 11-2 team and does have the talent and depth to play a brutal schedule which finds LSU opening against Oregon at Cowboys Stadium.

  5. TEXAS A&M--The Aggies closed out the 2010 regular season 6-0 in a run that included wins over Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas and they return nine starters on both sides of the ball and are a legitimate sleeper to win the national championship. Texas A&M had the 5th best offense in the country last year, averaging 441.9 yards per game and all the key players return.

  6. FLORIDA STATE--Seminoles return 17 starters from last year's 10-4 team and may well better this ranking. Like Alabama, Florida State has tremendous blue-chip depth across the board and certainly is well-armed to play a difficult schedule. The first test for FSU will come in the third game of the season when it hosts Oklahoma, a team to which it lost, 47-17, last season.

  7. NOTRE DAME--While the Notre Dame offense is a question mark even though it returns eight starters the Irish will field a top five defense that is primed to perform in lock-down fashion. With a defense this good, Notre Dame will not be required to score a lot of points to win. Eight starters return on both sides of the ball and the Irish will benefit from the hands-on approach of second-year coach Brian Kelly--one of the best teaching coaches in the business.

  8. BOISE STATE--The Broncos move to the Mountain West Conference this season and there is no reason to believe they won't keep right on trucking. This is a team that is 61-5 over the past five seasons and 124-18 over the past 10. Boise takes no prisoners, is loaded with blue-chip talent and has a quarterback in senior (he actually has already graduated and is a graduate student) Kellen Moore who is 38-2 as a starter and who has thrown for 10,867 yards and 99 touchdowns. His efficiency rating of 166.74 is the highest among all returning signal-callers. The Broncos get the acid test in its opening game of the season when it meets Georgia in Atlanta's Georgia Dome.

  9. NEBRASKA--The shakiest member of my Top 10 is Nebraska. The Cornhuskers had their moments in 2010 but closed out the season 1-3, losing to Washington, 19-7, in the Holiday Bowl. Nebraska had beaten this same Huskies team, 56-21, in Seattle earlier in the season. There is no question the Cornhuskers have talent but they will have to display better chemistry if they expect to be considered a serious contender for the national championship. For the record, they will have it much easier playing in the Big Ten--a conference that has basically been second rate for years. The Big 12 was much tougher.

  10. SOUTH CAROLINA--Steve Spurrier's time has arrived at South Carolina and this edition of the Gamecocks has the talent to go the distance, despite another brutal schedule. USC made it to the SEC championship game last season where it was crushed by eventual national champion Auburn, 56-17, but returns almost all the key players from that team and for the first time in years have the blue-chip depth to slug it out with anybody.

Odds On My Top 10 To Win It All

Here are the current odds on my pre-season Top 10 to win the national championship as posted at the Las Vegas Hilton Super Book. It also might be of interest to you that last year's national championship team, Auburn, is listed at 200-1. Odds on my Top 10:

Team Odds
Oregon 8-1
Alabama 9-2
Oklahoma 9-2
LSU 10-1
Texas A&M 30-1
Florida State 12-1
Notre Dame 20-1
Boise State 18-1
Nebraska 20-1
South Carolina 30-1

Getting Ready For Football

Let this serve as a reminder that, if you have not yet begun to get ready for the college football season, you are already behind schedule. With 123 NCAA Division I teams to analyze, an early start is a must, since only fools will bet the beginning weeks of the 2011 season off what happened last year. That is a bad habit that will cost you a fortune.

I have been working for weeks on the coming football season an d know already that I will release my first 100-unit play of the college season on Thursday night, Sept. 1. And you can bet all you want. For the record, you can sign up for the college and National Football League season right now for $199, and get free Best Bet Club baseball selections every day until the season begins. The Best Bets Club Package, which also includes four 100-unit game of the year plays, plus my 200-unit college game of the year, will later sell for $349.

Sign up now on this website or toll free at 1-800-755-2255 and start winning in baseball right now. All major credit cards are accepted. Best Bets Football Club membership at this early-bird price of $199 is the bargain of the year. Keep in mind, the baseball you receive in this package is worth $199.

As I have noted in this space, and on my football videos on this website, there will be an NFL season. Insider reports I have received say the lockout will end as soon as the small market teams such as Buffalo get a little more than is currently being offered. The NFL regular season will start on time.

Please tune in this Friday and Saturday for two more insightful and informative football handicapping classes on the video page on this website. As you did last week, bring a pencil and take the notes that will help you get ready to win.
