Win The Big One And Two More In NCAA Tonight

Going For My 3rd Straight 50-Unit NBA Game Of Week Tonight And Am Looking For Another Blowout ...Last Two Won By 22 And 21 Points...Don't Miss This One

By Kelso Sturgeon

The NCAA Tournament's Sweet Sixteen round opened with three favorites, including top-seeded Duke, losing while Butler knocked off Wisconsin to continue its unlikely run, winning its third straight game against a higher seeded team as an underdog.  That sets the table for four more Sweet Sixteen games today-and that includes upstart 11th-seeded Virginia Commonwealth which will be going for its fourth straight NCAA win as an underdog.

Even with defending champion Duke heading home after getting blown away by fifth-seed Arizona, 93-77, no team can rest easily it what is one of the most competitive NCAA Tournaments in history. Number one regional seeds Ohio State and Kansas will both be in action today and neither is a cinch to advance, although they are favored and expected to do so.

There simply are no easy wins for anyone. There are many who keep saying Connecticut, which upset San Diego State, 74-67, last night and VCU, which meets Florida State today just can keep getting it done at this pace. Third-seeded Connecticut handled San Diego State quite effectively last night, beating the second-seeded Aztecs, 74-67, and will meet Arizona Saturday, with the winner advancing to the Final Four. VCU just defies logic and imagination.

For the record, I lost my 100-Unit Sweet Sixteen Game of the Year with San Diego, which also was the Vegas wiseguys biggest play thus far in the tournament. Sorry about that.

Here are today's pairings, with a few comments and their NCAA Tournament records. Pointspreads are in parenthesis.

NCAA East Region Semifinals - Prudential Center, Newark

#11 Marquette (22-14) vs. #2 North Carolina (28-8)
North Carolina Is A 4 ½-Point Favorite - Total 150 ½

Marquette
Marquette (+2 ½) 66, Xavier 55
Marquette (+4 ½) 66, Syracuse 62
Marquette finished 11th in the Big East this season but played well enough in the conference's post-season tournament to get here. It is a team made up mostly of junior college transfers and stands 4-1 ATS in its last five games.

North Carolina (28-7)
North Carolina (-17 ½) 102, Long Island 87
North Carolina (-3 ½) 86, Washington 83
North Carolina stands 11-2 SU in its last 13 games and those two losses came at the hands of Duke. The Tar Heels tend to be a bit over-rated by those who make betting lines and have not covered in either of their NCAA games and in their last seven games are 1-5-1 ATS.

#4 Kentucky (27-8) vs. #1 Ohio State (34-2)
Ohio State Is A 5 ½-Point Favorite - Total 140

Kentucky
Kentucky (-13) 59, Princeton 57
Kentucky (-3 ½) 91, West Virginia 63
Kentucky starts three freshmen, all of them quite talented, but that has always been a negative at this level of play. The Wildcats are 8-0 SU and 5-2-1 ATS in their last seven games and 1-1 ATS in the NCAA. For what it is worth these teams have met five times in the NCAA Tournament-the last time in the first round in 1987-and Ohio State is 5-0 in those games.

Ohio State (34-2)
Ohio State (-25 ½) 75, Texas-SA 45
Ohio State (-11 ½) 98, George Mason 66
Ohio State is the actual number one seed of the entire tournament and the betting favorite to win it. The Buckeyes won their first two games in blowouts, hitting 61.0% and 55.8% from the floor, in those games. In four of their last five games they have held the opposition to 39.3% or less from the floor. While Ohio State's best player is a superstar freshman, this is a veteran team. Big money showed on the Buckeyes in this game. They opened -3.

NCAA Southwest Regional - Alamodome, San Antonio

#12 Richmond (29-7) vs. #1 Kansas (34-2)
Kansas Is A 10½ Point Favorite - Total 135 ½

Richmond
Richmond (+3) 69, Vanderbilt 66
Richmond (-4 ½) 65, Morehead State 48
Richmond is a solid, well-coached team that is 9-0 SU and ATS in its last nine games, indicating it is a bit under-valued by those making betting lines

KANSAS
Kansas (-22 ½) 72, Boston University 53
Kansas (-8) 73, Illinois 49
Kansas is by far the most talented team in the NCAA Tournament and has won its first two NCAA games by an average of 16.5 points. The Jayhawks are 1-1 ATS in the tournament and while going 10-0 SU in their last 10 games are just 5-5 ATS, meaning they are a big over-rated. They are the second betting choice behind Ohio State to win it all.

#10 Florida State (23-10) vs. #11 Virginia Commonwealth (26-11)
Florida State Is The 4½-Point Favorite - Total 131

Florida State (23-10)
Florida State (Pick'em) 51, Texas A&M 50
Florida State (+5) 71, Notre Dame 57
Florida State was one of the best teams in the country until 6-9 junior forward Chris Singleton, the Seminoles' best player, broke his foot. FSU went into a slump but still managed to get into the tournament and now has Singleton back. FSU does it all on defense and leads the NCAA in this category, giving up just 36.0% from the floor.

Virginia Commonwealth
VCU (+4) 59 Southern California 46
VCU (+5 ½) 74, Georgetown 56
VCU (+9 ½) 94, Purdue 76
VCU is a team playing with a chip on its shoulder and is the most incentive-driven team in the Big Dance, having been labeled by the pundits of having no business being there. The Rams post-season record speaks for itself and it success will depend on its ability to run its high-octane offense against Florida State's lock-down defense.
