There is not a bettor among us who has not been whacked in the wallet by counting our money before the immortal Fat Lady sang. All of us have lost games we felt were in the bag long before the last second ticked off the clock and when one gets stung enough times in this situation know the game is not over until it's over.

Maybe that's why I felt a little guilty last night when I declared the Los Angeles Lakers (-15 ½) the winner at half-time of their game with the Cleveland Cavaliers. When the teams headed for the locker room at the half, Los Angeles led by 27 points, 57-25, and you knew where this one was going.

At the end of three, it was L.A. by 51 points, 92-41, and had the NBA had a mercy rule the game would have been called to save Cleveland from the embarrassment of it all. In the end, the Lakers won by 55 points, 112-57. Los Angeles had held the Cavaliers to an all-time record low in points scored.

I had released the Lakers to my Chairman's Club members as a 15-unit power play for all the right reasons, as explained below.

It was the same for my Personal Best Club's 25-unit play on Texas (-7) at Texas Tech. I predicted a blowout and got just that as the Longhorns buried Texas Tech by 31 points, 83-52, and handed the Red Raiders their worst home loss since 1998.

Again, the play on Texas was for all the right reasons, as is explained below.

A 10-unit Best Bets Club play on underdog Florida (+3 ½) in its 81-75 win at Tennessee, also came for all the right reasons-again explained below.

Winning Is Not An Accident

I went 3-1 with my basketball plays last night, with my only loser being a 5-unit Best Bets Club play on Illinois (-4) in its 57-55 loss at Penn State. That play also was for a reason, but the win just did not happen.

I am stressing the "for a reason" point because basketball betting lines are so tight this season, one must come up with a reason beyond the pointspread to take a stand. If you take the time to go back and review all the college and NBA games played over the last two weeks you will find the line was in play in 80% of them.

This fact means, a field goal or two for either team in the game would have produced a different pointspread winner. For me, that would be a tough world in which to win, and that is why I know there must be both objective and subjective reasons for betting on a team.

Here are all the games I released last night, with the comments I wrote on this site to explain the reasons I was using each team. I think you will find them insightful and will serve as a lesson in handicapping.

Best Bets Club
10 Units
Florida (12-3) +3 ½ over TENNESSEE (10-5)
Prediction: Florida by 3-4
Final Score
Florida 81, Tennessee 75 (OT)
Comments: Both these teams have played tough schedules and both will come to play but the edge has to go to visiting Florida. The Gators are playing their best basketball right now, are going for their 5th straight win and stand 7-1 in their last 8 games. Florida is 4-1 away from Gainesville, with their only loss in those 5 games coming on a neutral floor to then undefeated Central Florida, 57-54. They have won at Xavier, Florida State and beat Kansas State on a neutral floor. Tennessee is one of this season's underachievers and will again be without head coach Bruce Pearl who is sitting out a suspension for recruiting violations.

5 Units
Illinois (13-3) -4 ½ over PENN STATE (9-6)
Prediction: Illinois by 8-9
Final Score
Penn State 57, Illinois 55
Comments: Penn State got its signature win in it last game, beating Michigan State, 66-62, in University Park as a 6-point underdog and that puts the Nittany Lions in a major bounce-downward mode-a reality supported by figures which say they can't win two in a row, even at home, against outstanding basketball teams-and Illinois is just that. The Fighting Illini come into this game off dominating home wins over Northwestern (10-4), 88-63, and Wisconsin (12-3), 69-61, and in those two games finally played the kind of defense of which they are capable, holding Northwestern to just 34.3% from the floor and Wisconsin 35.0%. Anything close to that tonight against Penn State should give Illinois a convincing road win.

Chairman's Club
15 Units
LOS ANGELES LAKERS (27-11) -15 over Cleveland Cavaliers (8-29)
Prediction: Los Angeles by 21-22
Final Score
Lakers 112, Cavaliers 57
Comments: NBA pundits have been highly critical of the Los Angeles Lakers and coach Phil Jackson lately for reasons known only to them. Maybe it has to do with the fact losers hate winners, regardless of all comments to the contrary. Regardless Los Angeles has won 6 of its last 7 and goes for its 5th straight win tonight. In addition to being at home, where they are 14-5, and having dramatically superior talent, the Lakers are facing a Cleveland team that is 3-17 on the road this season, is 1-21 in its last 22 games and which has been destroyed by injuries. There is no reason to believe this one will not be a  blowout.

Personal Best Club
25 Units
Texas (12-3) -7 over TEXAS TECH (8-8)
Prediction: Texas by 15-16
Final Score
Texas 83, Texas Tech 52
Comments: Texas Tech finds itself in the wrong place tonight, catching Texas coming off an 82-81overtime home loss to Connecticut, and that means the Longhorns arrived in Lubbock looking to make amends and polish their national image. If catching Texas coming off a loss is not enough of a dilemma, the Longhorns are a dramatically superior team in the world of talent and have already won at Michigan State (10-5), North Carolina (11-4) and at USC (9-6) and has defeated such national powers as Florida (12-3) and Illinois (13-3) on neutral floors. If that were not enough of a road resume, the Longhorns lost by 2 points, 68-66, to Pittsburgh (15-1), 68-66, on a neutral floor. The only edge Texas Tech has is the home court and the record suggests that won't be much help to the Red Raiders.
As you can see by reading my comments, there were definite reasons that I used each of these games and that is the kind of handicapping you can expect from me for the entire college and NBA basketball seasons.
