It's No Accident Boston Celtics 30-1 To Win NBA Title

Padres, Nationals, Rays, Cards Big Winners For Bettors

By Kelso Sturgeon

The revised betting lines on just which of the eight remaining teams will win the NBA playoffs went up today and it is no surprise the Cleveland Cavaliers are the 5-4 favorites to win it all and the Atlanta Hawks are the longest price on the board at 40-1. Since there is no room for sentiment in the world of basketball betting, the truth had to hit home for Boston Celtics fans when their team was listed at 30-1.

In the NBA Eastern Conference, Cleveland is 2-5 to emerge the winner, followed by Orland at 2-1, Boston at 13-1 and Atlanta at 18-1. In the West, the Lakers are odds-on at 4-9, followed by Phoenix at 4-1, San Antonio at 9-2 and the Utah Jazz at 10-1.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I must admit I almost fell off my office chair Saturday when some so-called expert on ESPN said he believed the Boston Celtics were still the best team in the NBA and would win the championship. I thought about contacting a friend at ESPN and demand the guy take a drug test but did not do so because a statement such as that actually suggests a brain transplant.

But that turned out to be an intelligent thought when I read a column by a noted Internet writer that Cleveland could not win the NBA title because the only quality player it had was LeBron James. I guess this guy never heard of Antawn Jamison, Mo Williams or Shaquille O'Neal, or the fact Cleveland has one of the most talented and deep benches in the NBA.

The fact Boston is listed at 30-1 to win the NBA championship speaks to reality. The Celtics are a team of name players, most of whom are past their prime, and are suffering the limitations forced on the human body by the process called aging. It was never more evident that in their opening game semifinal lost to Cleveland.

Boston came out on fire in that game and most certainly brought its "A" game, controlled the first half and was up 11 points in the third period. Three of Boston's top players just could not keep going and became sitting ducks for a younger, more athletic and more talented Cavalier team.

But that is what one must expect when your stars run out of gas because of their age. Guard Ray Allen is 36, forward Kevin Garnett is 35 and forward Paul Pierce is 33-and they can no longer go 48 minutes. If Boston had a bench, which it does not, it would be a playoff threat but it does not and has earned that 30-1.

None of this is written with disrespect to the Celtics. I have long been a Boston fan and still remember and celebrate the great Celtics teams of the past.

Sorry, Celtic fans, the man at the Las Vegas Hilton Super Book says your team is 30-1, and he's right.

Baseball's Money Earners And Money Burners

Baseball is a tricky sport to bet because it is not enough to blindly assume favorites win and bet nothing but the choices. It is important to find truly live underdogs who for many reasons have just as much of a chance to win as to the favorites.

I have been using several underdogs lately and making money with them. I am listing two of them here, one from Saturday and one from Sunday, to show you the reasoning behind releasing them as best bets.

Sunday, May 2

3 Units
BALTIMORE ORIOLES (6-18) +140 over BOSTON RED SOX (11-13)
Pitching for Baltimore: RH Kevin Millwood (0-3, 3.38)
Pitching for Boston: Josh Beckett (1-0, 7.22)
Results
Baltimore 3, New York 2 (10 Innings)
Winner

Comments: The Orioles go for the sweep of this three-game series and should get it, despite being a big underdog. Boston starter Josh Beckett is off to the same slow start he had last year but it cannot be lost on anyone just how poorly he is pitching. He has pitched 10 innings in his last two starts and has given up 15 runs, 16 hits and eight walks, and bettors are hitting .316 against him this season. Kevin Millwood will be on the mound for Baltimore and is winless only because of the lack of run support. In his starts, the Orioles have averaged just 2.53 runs per game. Millwood went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.45 in three starts against Boston last season.

Saturday, May 1

4 Units
Chicago White Sox (9-14) +145 over NEW YORK YANKEES (15-7)
Pitching for Chicago: LH John Danks (3-0, 1.55)
Pitching for New York: RH Javaier Vazquez (1-3, 9.00)
Results
Chicago White Sox 7, New York Yankees 6
Winner

Comments: The reasoning behind this play had everything to do with pitching. Danks had been pitching lights out while Vazquez was getting worse by the inning and even though the White Sox were hitting an American League worst .223 the figures said they would have a field day against him.

At this writing the team that has won the most money for baseball bettors this season is San Diego. The Padres (16-9) have been underdogs in 13 of their last 20 games and have gone 8-5 in those games, producing a profit of $840 for those who wagered at the $100 level on each game they have played.

The second biggest money maker is Washington, with a profit for $100 bettors of $780. That is because the Nationals have been underdogs in 19 of their last 20 games and have gone 11-8 in those games, winning at odds ranging from +100 to +225.

I do believe success in betting baseball must include live underdogs. For the record, two weeks ago I released on my free daily service the Washington Nationals (+190) and got the cash.

Winning baseball is available every single day on this site and toll free at 1-800-755-2255 and the price is right.
