Colts Even-Money Favorites To Win Super Bowl
But First They Have To Get Past New York Jets
Go 4-0 With Winning Sides, Totals On Both Games Sunday

By Kelso Sturgeon

This is another weekend of college basketball and NFL football that is loaded with opportunities to cash some big tickets. There 15-20 true showdown college basketball games on Saturday that will all but make or break the season for teams involved in them and the NFL conference championship games move front and center Sunday with the Indianapolis Colts the even money favorite to win the Super Bowl two weeks hence.

In Sunday’s NFL playoff games, Indianapolis (15-2) is a 7.5-point favorite over the New York Jets (11-7) in the American Football Conference championship game while the New Orleans Saints (14-3) is a 3.5-point favorite over the Minnesota Vikings (13-4) in the National Football Conference title contest.

If one is interested in betting on the Jets, there are at least three offshore sports books that offering Indianapolis at -8.0 and the rather daring 5 Dimes has made the Colts an 8.5-point favorite. Money line bettors will have to lay $340 to win $100 on the Colts, while they can get $300 for each $100 wagered on the Jets. The numbers on the Saints are -186 and on the Vikings +168.

The total on the Indianapolis-New York game opened at 40.5 and is now 39.0 while the opening number on the Vikings-Saints was 53.0 and it has stayed there. There are also more than 150 proposition bets being offered on the two games.

When College Basketball Figures Mislead

If you are a North Carolina basketball fan, please pause, reflect and then accept the reality that this Tar Hell basketball team is just what it is-a mediocre 12-7 college team that has lost three straight, four of its last five, and is still smarting from their 82-79 loss at lower mid-major College Of Charleston as a 14.5 favorite.

With no insult meant for North Carolina fans, the bottom line is telling you that what you see is what you get. The Tar Heels are a team hard-hit by injuries, have no legitimate point guard and a backcourt that is known more for its turnovers than its leadership and points.

North Carolina won the NCAA championship last year. Three cheers, but get over it. Both fans and bettors need to understand this is simply a subpar team that may be a year or two away from returning to the level of competitiveness expected in Chapel Hill.

It was almost laughable to pick up one of the nation’s leading sports newspapers today and read as two so-called college basketball experts were debating just where the Tar Heels would be seeded among the 65 teams invited to the NCAA Tournament. Take it to the bank that, short of a miracle, the Tar Heels are 3-5 not to get to the Big Dance, unless they get the same pass Lute Olson was given at Arizona each season.

Fans are impacted by North Carolina’s lack of success this season, but bettors who follow the Tar Heels, and are living in the 2008-09 season, are on their way to financial ruin. It is worth noting that despite the fact the Tar Heels are playing poorly, they have been an underdog but twice the entire season-a 5.0-point 'dog three games ago in a 83-64 loss at Clemson and a 7.0-point 'dog on a neutral floor nine games back to Texas, 103-90.

The only proof one needs to determine the quality of this North Carolina squad is its 1-5 record on the road. The good teams win at home and on the road. Lesser teams usually win at home but seldom do so on the road.

I have long contended a team is what it is when it is away from the warm and fuzzy surroundings of the home court. Win at home, and lose on the road, and you do not get my respect.

For the record, here is a list of teams that are on the betting board each week that have bad road records this season. They are listed by conference and in alphabetical order.
