SARATOGA HORSES TO WATCH
Friday 7/21-Friday 7-28
The horses listed below ran well enough in their first attempt at the Saratoga meet to expect them to run back and well before the meet is over.
ANOTHER – Trainer Bill Mott seldom has them ready for their debut so the sharp effort by this juvenile MSW colt for the place in 8 ½ furlong turf test despite being caught between rivals is a next out buy sign.
BELLOWS – 25K starter level veteran went two wide into the turn of 6 ½ furlong event had to go 7 wide until mid-stretch to find a lane and rallied for the show. Just needs a clean trip.
BUNYAAN – Low level claiming colt mixed it up early, held well through stretch and just failed to hold off favorite in 9 furlong test. Was 5 ½ lengths clear of show horse and claimed by Linda Rice. Wins next for sharp outfit.
FAST MAMA – In her third career start the MSW turf filly stretched out form 8 ½ furlongs to 11, tracked the pace along the inside in hand, cut the corner into upper stretch and after stalling behind rivals rallied for the show in a good effort. Distance and barn (Chad Brown) are a plus.
SLY ROXY – The juvenile Speightstown filly was well-prepped for her debut by Mark Casse. She pressed the pace 3 wide on the turn, was kept 4 wide and reserved in the lane and pulled well clear when asked. Could be a good one.
SMOKIN PLATINUM – Was forwardly placed from the start of the NYSB 5 ½ furlong juvenile MSW sprint despite racing from 12 post. While 4 wide in lane got a brief lead and was caught late while holding the place 4 lengths clear of the favorite in third. Breaks maiden soon.
SWAYED – In restricted entry level NYSB turf sprint the filly broke alertly then took back to sit just off the front runners from the two path. She split rivals in mid-stretch, continued aggressively and fell two noses short. Beats the level next time.
TARQUINA – The 3-year old filly got started late but might make up for it quickly. In her second career start last out she blitzed 40K maiden sprint claimers by 12 lengths. Now eligible for starters she could win right back at the protected 50K or less level.
TOM’S DE’TAT – In what might turn out to be a prep for an older division stakes later in the meet the Al Stall trained Smart Strike colt toyed with a field of good rivals in a 3rd level allowance-optional 80K claimer at a mile and an eighth. Play him on the step up.
VINTAGE MATTERS – NYSB marathon turf runner kept coming in 11 furlong entry level restricted test and fell less than a length short after closing 8 lengths in lane while 9 lengths clear of third finisher. Wins at the level.
WAR CANOE – Was a step slow and bumped at the break in the 40K mile and a sixteenth turf test. He moved 3 wide into the second turn, got fanned much wider in the 6 path in the lane and rallied strong for the show.
