Horses To Watch For The Upcoming Saratoga Meet
SARATOGA IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER… HERE ARE SOME HORSES THAT MIGHT BEAR WATCHING
HORSES TO WATCH
NOTE – With Saratoga looming (begins Friday, July 21, many horses that ran last week at Belmont will likely make their next tries at the Spa. With this in mind we take a brief look at a number of those horses and how that last race might translate to Saratoga.
Also listed are a few runners from Delaware, PARX and Monmouth who might ship to New York. In any case those runners should be followed at their home tracks as well.
(Horses To Watch From Monday, June 19 – Sunday, June 25)
DANCELAND – 3-year old Tapit filly was no match for classy stakes placed Defiant Honor in grass allowance route but charged from well back to get second. Sitting on big entry level allowance run for McGaughey.
LORD OF LOVE – While only 3-for-45 lifetime this turf sprinter was 2-for-2 second sprinting at the Spa last year and was second at 15-1 in first try since December 3. Set for longshot effort at course he likes.
MORNING BREEZ – Strong debut by NYSB Morning Line juvenile colt. Raced 3 wide throughout while in hand and drew clear sprinting through lane. Won’t be long eclipsing restricted conditions.
PUFFERY – Despite low first out percentage trainer this Flatter filly was the post time fave. Juvenile ran solid behind Pletcher firster and was clear of show filly by 6 ½ lengths. Breaks maiden in next.
ROCKFORD – Strong rally between rivals late to win 32K claiming sprint first of Diodorno claim. Veteran gelding is regaining solid form that saw him get win and third vs equal or better last year at Spa.
TIMBER – Turned in solid late run in 6 ½ furlong claimer and was haltered by hot, new-to-NY trainer Diodorno. Should love 7 panels at the Spa.
RUNS FOR LUCK – Veteran claiming gelding easily eclipsed 20K rivals at 6 ½ panels and was claimed by trainer Steve Klesaris who is at home in New York and has great PARX numbers. Right back at either locale.
TAZKEYA – Michael Pino trained MSW daughter of Blame made first start since second at the Spa last summer and drew off handily as the 4-5 favorite. A trip back north to face allowance runners might be in store.
T R CREW – In first start since 4/23 the Uncle Mo colt found his best form with solid tracking trip and good margin win at mile. Richard Vega trainee had a pair of strong 9 furlong Spa tries last year and might return. In good form.
TWO WEEKS OFF – Harlan’s Holiday horse made it two straight with easy 3 ½ length tally in two turn 20K claimer. Was haltered by trainer Guerrero and deserves continued attention at two turns.
CLASS AND CASH – Veteran turf runner toyed with rivals when well spotted in 25K Starter Allowance in last. Jane Cibelli trainee is capable of beating much better in mid-distance two turn turf test.
POOL WINNER – Alan Goldberg trained turf sprinter easily handled NW3 Allowance/Optional 50K claimers in last and would fit nicely in upper level claiming or minor turf stakes sprint at Monmouth or Spa.
PROFORMA – The 3-year old Munnings gelding rebounded nicely from tough test on Preakness day and easily won the restricted Jersey Shore Sprint. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him in age group sprint stakes at the Spa.
JEZZIE – Jorge Navarro trained Kantharos filly at peak right now after running away from 20K claimers fro second straight. Trainer likes to step up and likes to ship. She should keep winning.
PROUD REUNION – 3-year old MSW filly made first start since juvenile season in last and rallied smartly for the place in 7 ½ furlong turf test. She broke in air, was 4 wide, got late lead and just missed. Solid trainer Tom Proctor has many options.
SPANISH ROMANCE – Looked to have 5 furlong second allowance level turf sprint in hand when steadied late in stretch to finish second. Consistent Arnaud Delacour filly will eclipse the level in next.
