SARATOGA TO BELMONT – Horses To Watch In Early Weeks Of Belmont Fall Meet
Below are a number of horses that showed in their most recent race(s) at Saratoga that they should be on every bettor’s radar when racing opens at Belmont on Saturday, September 7.
DAWLEY – The 5-year old gelding has turned in a number of good efforts of late, including a solid rallying second vs entry level allowance sprinters in most recent. He broke off the pace in the 6 furlong test, continued within range, swung 5 wide into the lane and while no match for the winner grabbed runner-up honors 6 ½ lengths clear of the show horse. Wins one of these soon.
FANCY BOSS – The juvenile daughter of Street Boss took no prisoners as she dusted her NYSB foes in her debut. The Gary Contessa trainee was rank loading but when the gate opened she wasted little time assuming command in the 5 ½ furlong turf sprint and won off in 1:03 4/5. Should handle more distance and will move through restricted conditions or even handle open company.
FLASH FORWARD – The 3-year old daughter of Curlin was most impressive running away to an 8 ¼ length victory in the 9 furlong ungraded My Flag Stakes. The Dominick Schettino trainee settled 3 wide on the first turn, rated professionally down the backstretch, moved out to the middle of the track in the lane and drew clear. Will handle better.
GRAND ARRIVAL – After a solid third going shorter vs juvenile MSW rivals on opening weekend the Harlan’s Holiday colt relished the slop and 7 furlong distance as he disputed the early pace, inched up while 3 wide on the turn and drew clear in the lane by a wide margin. Should move forward vs allowance foes and handle more ground for trainer Nick Zito.
HEBERT HALL – The David Jacobsen trained gelding was no match for the odds-on winner in most recent 5 ½ furlong turf claimer but showed plenty of resolve in rallying for the place. He appears comfortable at the level and should appreciate 6 or 7 furlongs on the Belmont grass.
HONOR CODE – Trainer Shug McGaughey rarely has them ready at first asking and is more adept at stretching them out. So the visibly extraordinary rally from 20 ½ lengths back in this 7 furlong MSW debut puts an immediate buy sign on the juvenile son of A.P. Indy. Bred for all surfaces and distance, he wins right back.
KETEL TWIST – Juvenile MSW turf filly was alert early and moved up to contest the pace from the outside in mile and a sixteenth test over a good surface. The Bill Mott trainee was steadied at the ¾ marker, moved to contention outside the quarter pole and after assuming a brief lead just failed to last. Breaks through vs the same next time.
PURE AMOUR – The 5-year old race mare most likely needed her last (off a 6/20 layoff) as she moved inside early in the second level allowance turf route. She remained under restraint to the top of the top of the lane, tipped out in the straightaway and collected show honors well clear of the rest. Eclipses the level soon.
SIDEWAYS VISION – The juvenile MSW colt turned in a sharp debut effort vs NYSB peers. The Bruce Levine trainee broke from the rail, moved out willingly on the turn in the 6 furlong test. Continued to move towards the pace-setter and got up for the place. Breaks maiden soon vs peers.
START IT UP – Made her first start since February in last and was doomed from the start. The 3-year old filly tried to move through on the rail and was taken back before swinging 5 wide and finishing evenly. She most certainly needed the race and was claimed out of the 35K sprint by David Jacobsen so definitely bears watching.
