Juvenile half-brother to Super Saver captures debut at Belmont

BRETHREN (Distorted Humor), a half-brother to this year's Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Super Saver (Maria's Mon), overcame a slight stumble at the start to debut a winner in Saturday's 2ND race at Belmont Park. Like Super Saver, Brethren is trained by Todd Pletcher for owner/breeder WinStar Farm.

Part of a coupled entry that was favored at 3-5, Brethren quickly recovered from his bobble and led for a few strides before Backdown (Gulch) rushed up along the inside to grab the lead. Brethren pressed the pacesetter through splits of :22 4/5 and :45 2/5, finally wore him down by midstretch, and kept on strongly to hold off Black N Beauty (Devil His Due) by a half-length. The final time for six furlongs was a brisk 1:08 4/5 on the fast track.

"He obviously has a lot of pedigree, and he came in with high expectations," Pletcher said. "He had been very focused and forward in the morning, having done everything we had asked him to do.

"We felt like he'd be very competitive and that he was a colt who could win first time out if things went smoothly. Aside from a stumble at the gate, it went very well."

Pletcher said that Brethren is likely to make his next start in a stakes, with the specific race to be determined at a later date.

Bred in Kentucky, Brethren is out of Supercharger (A.P. Indy), a winning full sister to recent Vosburgh S. (G1) victor and Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) contender Girolamo, Top Flight H. (G2) heroine and Gazelle H. (G1) second-place finisher Daydreaming, and Pilgrim S. (G3) winner and Metropolitan H. (G1) third Accelerator.

In 2009, Super Saver launched his own career in New York, finishing second at Saratoga before going on to graduate by seven lengths at Belmont in his second start. He is currently on the sidelines at WinStar near Versailles, Kentucky, recuperating from condylar bruising.
