The Right One Wins At Belmont

Racing in next-to-last position to the top of the stretch, Right One circled widest and was along in the final strides to nip pacesetter Yield Bogey by a desperate head in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Jaipur Stakes, the final graded stakes at Belmont's spring-summer meet.

Yield Bogey, who ran second in last year's Jaipur with stretch-running tactics, easily got clear down the backstretch through a soft first quarter in 23.74 seconds, and maintained the advantage through a half-mile in 46.66 seconds while pressed by second choice Gantry and 15-1 outsider Evolutionist.

Right One, ridden by Javier Castellano, began gathering momentum at the quarter pole and sustained a long rally to get by Yield Bogey in the final strides.

"He's the kind of horse who needs to cover up and look for a target in the race and finish," said Castellano. "We thought there might be more speed in the race, but the way it developed today, it was kind of slow in the beginning. I had to come out a little because I didn't think I could go through between horses -- inside, on the rail, all the horses were stuck together. The only shot I had was to go around horses."

Right One ($6.40) won for the third time in four U.S. starts since being imported from France and given over to trainer Christophe Clement. He ran seven furlongs in 1:21.87 on a firm Widener turf course, and earned $60,000 for owner-breeder Ghislaine Head.

"Perhaps we'll put him away and wait for the fall," said Clement.

Yield Bogey held second by three-quarters of a length over Evolutionist. Radiohead was a half-length further back in fourth. The order of finish was completed by Gantry, Targhee Pass, and Nordic Truce.

The Jaipur was the fourth win on the card for Castellano, who whittled Ramon Dominguez's lead to 69-67 heading into Sunday's final program.
