Deputy Daney Stays Perfect At Aqueduct
DEPUTY DANEY STAYS PERFECT AT AQUEDUCT
Matthew Hand’s Deputy Daney shipped from Philadelphia Park to Aqueduct Racetrack boasting an unblemished record, and left Monday afternoon with his first stakes victory after taking the 26th running of the $63,700 Jimmy Winkfield.
Always within striking distance, Deputy Daney raced inside of odds-on favorite Citizen’s Arrest through an opening quarter of 22.64 before taking the lead and opening up on the far turn.
Challenged by Red Bengal in the stretch, Deputy Daney responded gamely and completed six furlongs in 1:11.83 over the good inner track.
“We were stuck in the one hole,” winning trainer Cathal Lynch said. “We weren’t really sure what we were going to do. He’s just a fast little horse.”
Ridden by Angel Arroyo, Deputy Daney has now won all three of his career starts. The Jimmy Winkfield was the 3-year-old Officer colt’s first race outside of Philadelphia Park and first against stakes competition.
“When he broke I felt like I had a lot of horse, so I tried to save ground,” Arroyo said. “I saw the five horse [Citizen’s Arrest] go to the lead, so I just relaxed and tried to save some horse for the end.”
Red Bengal, also making his stakes debut, finished 1¼ lengths behind in second. It was another 5¾ lengths to Mia’s Angel in third. Citizen’s Arrest, sent off at 3-5, and Love Who completed the order of finish.
Sent off as the 7-1 third choice in the field of five, Deputy Daney paid $16 for a $2 win bet.
After the race, his trainer indicated a return to Aqueduct is likely in his colt’s future.
“We’re not sure if he can go two turns, but we’ll probably come back in the [six furlong] Fred Capossela [on March 6],” Lynch said.
With the win, Deputy Daney increased his career earnings to $92,400
