Wayne Root: Finding Round of 32 Upsets in the NCAAs
Wayne Root: Finding "Round of 32" Upsets in the NCAA's
It's easy to get exhausted over the first two days of NCAA Tournament action. The first TV game isn't even to halftime and the next one has begun! That happens all day, then all night. When do you come up for air?
Figure out a way!
There's a whole new slate of games to handicap and bet on both Saturday and Sunday. As THE KING OF UPSETS, its' my job to help you find some live dogs who are capable of winning straight up. Frankly, with so many low and medium lines, ANY underdog from this point forward is capable of winning straight up.
In fact...there are many dogs on the card Saturday who I won with on my Thursday 5-0 board sweep!
*St. Mary's was an easy PINNACLE winner over VCU. They'll be getting points from Arizona in a game that will be very heavily bet here in Las Vegas because both teams played their conference tournaments in town.
*Middle Tennessee dominated Minnesota as an "Inner Circle" release. They're getting points from Butler. Could the Blue Raiders make it all the way to the Sweet 16?
*Northwestern survived Vanderbilt as a "No Limit" play, though they would have covered +2 for me even if they hadn't benefitted from a boneheaded foul from Vandy. The Wildcats are getting points from #1 seed Gonzaga.
*Wisconsin pulled away late to get the money against Virginia Tech. The Badgers are getting points from another #1 seed, Villanova.
Purdue was the final release in the ROOT TRUST on Thursday. They either pushed at -10, or covered at lower numbers depending on when you bet it. The early Saturday line has them at -1 over Iowa State. So, the Boilermakers aren't a Saturday dog as I write this...but the line could move that way between now and tip-off.
Will I be making upset calls on any of those teams Saturday? And, what will drive any SHOCKER bets on Sunday? Here are the keys:
*Now more than ever, I'm looking at the vulnerability of the favorite. What is the favorite's weakness that is likely to jump up and bite them in a big game? We have so much parity in the sport right now that most dogs have a good idea of what they're trying to do. Even lesser known mid-majors have players or schematics that can be effective. But, you don't want to bet on them for value (or really big money) unless the favorite can be exploited. If the underdog's strength can be negated by the favorite's strength...then the dog has little chance to win. Be sure you spend some time late Friday and Saturday before tipoff looking at potential issues for the favorites.
*I always emphasize the importance of SCORING points. The media likes to tell you that "defense wins championships." That side of the floor is certainly important. But, to score upsets, underdogs have to out-score the favorites. Very tough to do that without a go-to-guy in crunch time, or some guys who can nail threes. We saw a lot of very high scoring games Thursday, as 11 of the 16 games went Over. That's a GREAT sign for potential upsets Saturday.
*My final point of emphasis for you today is each team's record in close games vs. tournament caliber opposition. Analysts are fortunate that the major conferences had a lot of depth this season. So, it's easy to look up how, say, Purdue and Iowa State performed vs. other Dance teams. Or Notre Dame and West Virginia. It's tougher for Middle Tennessee and St. Mary's. But, those cupboards aren't completely bare. Once you have those straight up and ATS records...
Look for Saturday and Sunday favorites who were surprisingly poor
Look for Saturday and Sunday underdogs who were surprisingly successful
Back teams who have an established track record vs. quality. Fade teams who don't.
