Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist will be the heavy favorite to win the 141st running of the Preakness Stakes Saturday but will have to do it on an “off” track. Advance weather forecasts for the day say there is a 100% chance of rain Saturday, with in excess of an inch falling and it will be accompanied by 10-15 mile-per-hour wind gusts that will hold the high temperature for the day to a chilly 58 degrees.
Miserable weather but there will still be a winner in every race, including the big one. The biggest challenger to the undefeated 8-for-8 Nyquist will again by Exaggerator who finished a fast-closing second to him in Louisville. It is of note this will be the fourth meeting between the two best 3-year-olds in the country and that on all four occasions Exaggerator had Nyquist’s behind in view at the wire.
Kind of reminds me of Crozier chasing Carry Back to the wire back in the 1960s. It always appeared Crozier would get it done but Carry Back kept nailing him on the money in four straight classic races.
If you remember by column two weeks before the Kentucky Derby you know what I think of Nyquist. He is a very special horse with that look of eagles in the same vein as the likes of Citation, Dr. Fager, Kelso and Seattle Slew. He has everything it takes to become the second straight Triple Crown winner in the past two seasons.
In studying the films of the Kentucky Derby, it is my opinion he hit the wire with something left and will have a full tank of gas when he faces a field of 10 opponents Saturday. Trainer Doug O’Neil, who is fast becoming one of the best conditioners in the country, has wisely declined to do more than just gallop the Uncle Mo colt into the Preakness. He noted the Kentucky Derby can be likened to four hard workouts and that nothing more was needed for Saturday’s race.
There will be several new shooters in the Preakness—but no Gun Runner who finished third in Louisville—but there is little in the past performances of any of them that says they can beat Nyquist and/or Exaggerator. That is being said cautiously because this is Thoroughbred racing where the unexpected seems to have its say at the most unusual of times.
New Shooter Has Won 2 Races By 25 Lengths
Trainer Todd Pletcher will send out the real sleeper in the race with unbeaten Stradivari who broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park by 11 lengths and then came right back at Keeneland and won a tough conditioned allowance race by 14 lengths. The Preakness is a major jump in class for this should-be-mud-loving son of Medaglia d’Oro but only a fool would disregard him.
Dale Romans, always a threat to win anywhere he shows up, has Cherry Wine in the Preakness and it is of note he broke his maiden by 9¼ lengths on a sloppy track, In his last start he was third in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland but lacked enough points to get into the Kentucky Derby lineup.
Lani, the Japanese champion also must get some consideration. A true bad boy with his always unpredictable behavior (he was saddled on the track in Kentucky because there was fear he would wipe out the crowded paddock if he so wishes) has a ton of class and must be considered.
Lani, who was been stabled on the quiet backside of Belmont Park since the Derby, finished a decent 9th in Louisville and has a decent shot to be in the gimmicks, if not win it all. seriously!
The Only Way To Beat Nyquist
As noted I am a Nyquist believer and that look in his eyes sends a very clear and intimidating message to all comers, as in, “give me your best shot and I’ll still beat you”.
Nyquist is unbeaten for a reason—mainly that he is the best of his crop. He has won over six different tracks, can set the pace, stalk or come from off the pace. He doesn’t need any special track condition to win and has been victorious in the “off” going. He simply overcomes everything.
It is my opinion the only way to beat him is with a perfectly timed move right on the wire, before he knows you’re there. If he sees you, he won’t let you by, and it is obvious if you run with him he will rip our heart out.
It should be Nyquist in the Preakness but let’s not forget it’s still horse racing.
Another 50-Unit Big Money NBA Winner Tonight
I Have Been On Quite A Run In The NBA Playoffs But Stubbed My Toe Last Night With The Raptors And Intend To Redeem Myself In A Big Way
Nothing comes easy in the NBA playoffs but I still continue to get it done in a very strong way, standing 6-2 with my last eight releases, and those winners include a 50-unit upset win with the Oklahoma City Thunder over the Golden State Warriors and a 100-unit NBA Playoff Game of the Year blowout victory by the Toronto Raptors over the Miami Heat. The winning continues tonight. The Thunder (64-30) take on the Warriors (81-12) again tonight in game two of the seven-game Western Conference championship round and my feelings about the game are quite strong, meaning I am going for another 50-unit win tonight.
