Wayne Root: New York Giants at Washington Could Determine NFC East!
Wayne Root: New York Giants at Washington Could Determine NFC East!
Among the happiest people in the world this past Thanksgiving night were the players on the New York Giants and Washington Redskins. They already knew their game would be important this Sunday in the tight (and disappointing!) NFC East race. Then...
*Philadelphia looked so bad in its loss Thursday afternoon in Detroit that it's nearly impossible to take them seriously as a threat. Blowout losses to Tampa Bay and Detroit (!!) have dropped the Eagles to 4-7. They'd have to win four of their last five games to finish 8-8, which might not be enough to win the NFC East anyway. Plus, they still have to play New England and Arizona!
*Dallas followed that up with a poor performance against Carolina. The NFC East entries lost by a combined 78-28 on Turkey Day in games that were supposed to be toss-ups. The Cowboys are now 3-8.
*In the second half of the Dallas game, Tony Romo suffered another collarbone injury! That stuck a fork in the Cowboys season right there. They haven't won a game in 2015 that Romo didn't start.
I mean...it couldn't possibly have gone better for the Giants and Redskins! Both of their rivals lost big...AND Romo was knocked out again!
You longtime readers know that I follow the New York sports teams very closely. Though I've lived out here in Las Vegas now for decades, I grew up in NY as a true S.O.B. (son of a butcher!). We've talked often in 2015 about playoff shots for both the Giants and the Jets. Obviously, I need to step in here to look at this huge Giants/Redskins game Sunday. The G-men will be very well-positioned to win the division if they win that game.
STANDINGS IF THE GIANTS WIN
NY Giants 6-5
Winning Sunday would mean a series sweep over Washington...which makes that a virtual three-game lead over the Redskins because NYG would own the tie-breaker. Philadelphia does have a chance to catch New York from behind. The season-ender is a rematch in Gotham from Philly's earlier win. Should the Eagles win that to force a tie...they would win the division on the tie-breaker. (But, again, the Eagles still have to play New England and Arizona!).
The bad news for New York is that they don't have any sure things left on the schedule...
AHEAD FOR NEW YORK
December 6: vs. the NY Jets
December 14: at Miami
December 20: vs. Carolina
December 27: at Minnesota
January 3: vs. Philadelphia
The market will have virtual coin flips in those first two...then likely short dog prices at home against Carolina and at Minnesota. A 6-5 record after a Sunday win could still yield a losing record and a spot on the couch beside the rest of us watching the playoffs on TV. This is why generating some margin for error with a victory Sunday is so important.
STANDINGS IF THE REDSKINS WIN
Washington 5-6 (tie-break edge on divisional record)
NY Giants 5-6
Wow...Washington would move into first place with a win thanks to what would be a 2-1 record in the division (compared to 2-3 for the G-men). The teams would have split their regular season meetings. Note that Washington still gets to play shorthanded and beleaguered Dallas twice.
AHEAD FOR WASHINGTON
December 7: vs Dallas
December 13: at Chicago
December 20: vs. Buffalo
December 26: at Philadelphia
January 3: at Dallas
Visiting Chicago and hosting Buffalo won't be gifts given how those teams are playing lately. What happens at Philadelphia may depend on whether or not that game still means anything to the Eagles. Given the Dallas Power Ratings without Romo, Washington has the easier remaining schedule compared to NYG.
We have enough evidence to say that Sunday's matchups isn't yet a "championship" game for the division. There's a lot of football left to be played. But, you can see why it's so important. New York would take a comfortable lead over a group of mediocre teams. Washington would pull slightly ahead in a ski race that's much more downhill for them from this point forward.
Who's WAYNE ALLYN ROOT going to take in the game? I can't tell you that here. It might be a pass depending on line movement between now and game day. Or, I may have great information from my New York sources about how this one is likely to go. Remember that Washington is playing its best football at home this season, and they do have revenge from a loss from several weeks ago. Will this be another headline-making upset call from the only man in the sports betting industry that has a star on the Walk of Fame here in Las Vegas?
