Back-up Quarterbacks Can Help You Back Up the Truck
Wayne Root: Back-up Quarterbacks Can Help You Back Up the Truck!
Some were scratching their heads Sunday when I released my PINNACLE play on the Cleveland Browns (+1) over the Tennessee Titans. That was fine with me. When people think I have plays that "don't make sense," my clients usually make money.
Yes, Johnny Manziel had some trouble coming in to replace the injuried Luke McCown on the road in New York in the first week of the season. But I really liked his chances to bounce back strong in Cleveland's home opener at Tennessee. And I couldn't believe the game was near pick-em!
*Cleveland was in a bounce-back spot off a loss
*Tennessee was in a letdown spot after a win
*Tennessee was starting a rookie quarterback
*Marcos Mariota won WAY too easily the prior week!
*Cleveland was the better team last year!
Did everyone forget that Tennessee was horrible last season?! Sure they looked great in the opener at Tampa Bay. But that one result didn't fix everything that was wrong with them. Plus you saw that Tampa Bay may have been looking ahead to hated divisional rival New Orleans given the Bucs upset this past Sunday. There were way too many kneejerk assumptions about Mariota and Tennessee off that one game.
I knew we were in great shape when Johnny Football dropped back on his first pass and threw a 60-yard bomb for a touchdown. He was ready to play...and Tennessee was unprepared and flat.
If you look through my full weekend card, you'll see that I backed a few guys who were backup quarterbacks at the beginning of the 2015 season.
*Notre Dame was a No Limit play that easily won outright over Georgia Tech
*Texas was an Inner Circle play that covered and could have won over California
*Washington was an NFL Perfect Play winner Sunday that absolutely crushed the Rams
Kirk Cousins was the projected backup for the Redskins in the Preseason before RGIII got hurt. The college kids I backed were true playmakers who were being unfairly discounted by the betting markets.
I should mention that Saturday's PINNACLE play and Pac 12 Game of the Year on Stanford (+10) over USC didn't involve a backup...but did feature a team that many had given up on. Stanford looked awful in a bad body clock game at Northwestern to start the season. But, they always peak as Pac 12 underdogs in big games. As I mentioned last week in my game preview...they're exactly the kind of team you want in that kind of situation.
When the public gives up on a team...that's when you should consider that team most seriously!
Why does WAYNE ALLYN ROOT win so often with "ugly" teams that nobody else wants to touch?
I recognize that:
*You're almost always getting free points
*You're almost always opposing an overconfident favorite
*You're often backing a "something to prove" underdog or cheap favorite
*If you have a talented backup quarterback, the team might IMPROVE
The Texas Longhorns are better with this quarterback. Washington is almost certainly better with Cousins right now than RGIII. Notre Dame's prior starter was pretty good...but there may not have been a drop off. We didn't really need all the free points because our "don't make sense" edges were so dramatic. They DID make sense if you truly understood football handicapping.
I want you to keep this in mind through the season. It's not like quarterback injuries are about to stop! The Dallas Cowboys will now be starting Brandon Weeden for the next several weeks because Tony Romo fractured his collarbone. Chicago lost Jay Cutler to a hamstring injury earlier Sunday. I'm not saying I'll definitely be on the backups next week. I will be looking for great opportunities through 2015 where the stars align just right.

My PINNACLE plays make headlines every season...so winners on Stanford and the Browns were no surprise. Be sure you get those every week!
Back with you later this week for more football fun. I'll continue with my Pac 12 notes by featuring USC at Arizona in a few days. Is NOW the time to bet USC since they missed the spread by so much against Stanford? Over the weekend, we'll look at the debacle that's been going on in Philadelphia just as the Eagles head to my old stomping grounds in New York to take on the Jets.
The only man in the sports betting industry with a star on the "Walk of Fame" here in Las Vegas will always keep you a few steps ahead of the oddsmakers.
