More College Powers Posting Bad Results

Wayne Root: More College Powers Posting Bad Results

I warned you to look out for this (like I do every year), yet the mainstream media continues to be shocked by the bad results going up on the board for national powers. Just this past Monday, I talked about the disappointing weekend for Western powers Gonzaga, Arizona, and Utah. After that article went up, we've seen...

#4 DUKE forced to overtime against one of the worst major conference teams in the country. You may have watched some of the game Wednesday night where the 16-point favorites were life and death with Virginia Tech. It looked just like those recent Dance losses to Lehigh and Mercer. Duke played disinterested defense, and just waited around for the inferior team to collapse. Didn't happen!

#5 WISCONSIN barely seemed to show up Tuesday night at Maryland. They fell way behind in the first half and at least rallied to make it interesting for awhile. But, this is a Maryland team that had been struggling badly in recent weeks. Given that the Badgers have already lost a home game to's very hard to see them as a real threat to Kentucky in the Big Dance. They were only 6 of 22 on treys. When the bombs aren't falling, their defense doesn't do enough to slow down quality opposition.

#8 KANSAS lost on Big Monday to Kansas State. Coach Bill Self is getting sick and tired of opposing student bodies storming the court when they upset his Jayhawks. He should win more road games! Can you believe Brent Musburger was trying to hype Kansas as #1 seed material during the telecast? Joe Lunardi had to tell him that Kansas didn't have the numbers, nor enough with the eye test to warrant such consideration.

#9 NOTRE DAME was humbled by Syracuse. This is another team that is in dire straits when their three-pointers aren't falling. Who can stay hot from long range through the NCAA Tournament? Nobody! Notre Dame's defense is one of the worst amongst teams projected to be Sweet 16 seeds. They made inconsistent Syracuse look great.

#12 IOWA STATE utterly fell apart late in the game vs. Baylor Wednesday night. If they had won, they would have moved into a tie for first place with Kansas at the top of the Big 12. Media pundits were already calling them a Final Four darkhorse on the assumption they'd beat Baylor. Games last 40 minutes! Add Iowa State to the list of teams who's defense gets exposed when facing talent.

#15 NORTH CAROLINA was embarrassed at home by NC State Tuesday Night. This was right after ESPN's Seth Greenburg was saying in the studio that they had a shot to be a Final Four team. Carolina missed the spread by 20 points! Occasionally the Tar Heels play at the level of a power. That's not going to be enough in the NCAA's.

Look, anything can happen in the tournament. If Connecticut can go the distance as a #7 seed (which happened last year), then...technically ANYONE is possible Final Four team. But, in terms of realistic handicapping, YOU need to be focused on the strengths and weaknesses of all the contenders rather than listening to networks hype their broadcasts.

*The ACC has a lot of talent, but nobody's unbeatable
*The Big 12 is deep, but not truly scary at the top
*The Big 10 will probably launch one surprise, while suffering multiple disappointments
*The Western powers have played very soft schedules

For now, Kentucky still looks to be clear of the field. We'll see what happens when they visit Georgia soon, and then have to play three games in three days on a neutral court in the SEC tournament. Hopefully it's not Kentucky and the 67 dwarfs this year! I don't expect that to happen. But, I do expect there to be a lot of upsets between now and championship night where media-hyped teams are exposed as pretenders. WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is THE KING OF UPSETS after all!
