Barkey and Analytics
Charles Barkley Puts His Foot in His Mouth Again
By Wayne Root:
If you've been paying attention to sports news this week, you know that basketball Hall-of-Famer and TNT analyst Charles Barkley put his foot in his mouth again when talking about the role "analytics" play in the NBA.
In a way, I can understand what Barkley is going through. College and pro basketball were played a certain way back when he was a star. He was truly a force on the court, and a much better player than many critics have given him credit for. But, the game has evolved past that...and "the right way" to play has adjusted as well.
I was in the same boat myself...becoming "The King of Las Vegas" in terms of handicapping (I'm still the only man in the sports betting industry with a star on the "Walk of Fame" here in Las Vegas) before the real onslaught of computers influenced the markets. I had to change with the times as new crops of "whiz kids" who thought they knew handicapping better than me came along to challenge.
*I kept applying the fundamentals that worked, ditching the ones that stopped working
*I embraced computer technology, and then the power of the internet
*I kept looking for weaknesses in the market as "dumb" money got smarter
I didn't make the mistake Barkley did. I evolved with the times. It was my only choice if I wanted to stay at the top of the industry. I can't tell you how many old time "Vegas handicappers" got left in the dust once the market responded to what are now called "analytics." A lot of big names went bust. The names you still see that were also prominent in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's were the ones who figured out how to keep winning.
And, WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is still making headlines!
What do I think about "analytics?" Look, you do whatever it takes to win. One of the great things about living in Las Vegas is that you get to be on the cutting edge of technology. This is where that industry holds its conventions! I've always been a gadget guy. If some new toy is going to help me beat the market, it pays for itself. I've burned through a lot of gadgets that went obsolete. But, I'm probably already using NOW what you won't even know about for another year or so. Winners have to stay ahead of the curve.
This is true for the technology you use, and the stats that they help you monitor. The mainstream media has been very slow to grasp the kinds of statistical analysis that were first being used by professional bettors here in Vegas. People wrote books in the late '90's about stuff that had already been going on for 15 years. Books 10 years ago that supposedly helped "create" the analytics industry covered strategies that had been known in Vegas long before. The word "analytics" is derived from "analyze." (You don't need an Ivy League education to figure that out!). Handicapping is analyzing. It's all the same thing.
That's probably the saddest thing about Barkley's rant. It showed you how out of touch he was with the reality of the modern NBA. He doesn't think the Spurs are an "analytics" team, when they've quietly been cutting edge for years. He doesn't think Dallas was an "analytics" team when they beat Miami for the championship, which is complete blindness! He doesn't think Miami was an analytics team when Shane Battier was on the roster!
Oh...one other point. If you put "Charles Barkley" and "Las Vegas" in the same sentence, it's probably going to be about the MILLIONS of dollars he's lost gambling in our fair city. Think about that for awhile. The guy who hates math has lost a fortune gambling. You think he would have learned something after handing so much money away.
If you want to MAKE a fortune in Las Vegas rather than losing it, you must have respect for all the tools that can help you do so. Or, sign up with a proven winner who's shown he can beat the game! Now's the perfect time to get on board. We have the month of February to build our bankrolls for March Madness. I've been on a great run of late, which you read about the last time we were together. A mix of classic fundamental angles and state-of-the art analytics allows me to find the best options on the card every day. They don't all win because the nature of athletic performance has too much variance. My clients and I win a lot more than we lose over the long haul. That's how you get a star on the "Walk of Fame!"
See you again early next week. As for now...it's time for YOU to go to W.A.R. alongside WAYNE ALLYN ROOT!
