Syracuse Self Reports

By Wayne Root

This is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in college basketball. And the mainstream media has been very slow to take Syracuse to task for “responsibly” self-reporting potential violations in the basketball program just at the time they were falling out of the NCAA tournament picture.

Jim Boeheim’s team has “banned itself” from postseason play this year. They had just fallen out of everyone’s projected brackets! ESPN’s Joe Lunardi didn’t even have them on his bubble any more (they weren’t listed as the first four out, or the next four out in the last posting). They were lucky to beat horrible Virginia Tech this past Tuesday…and that was the second nailbiter they had played against that team. The team was playing so far below expectations that they were 1-8-1 ATS over their last eight games.

The Orange weren’t playing remotely like an NCAA tournament caliber team. How courageous of them to ban themselves from the postseason. They weren’t getting invited anyway. Do you think this would have happened if Syracuse was in the top 10?

As bad as things have already been…
*Syracuse hasn’t played Duke yet
*Syracuse hasn’t played Virginia yet
*Syracuse hasn’t played Notre Dame yet
*Syracuse hasn’t played Louisville yet
*Syracuse hasn’t played NC State yet
*Syracuse has played North Carolina, but lost by 10
*Syracuse has played Miami, but lost at home by 4.

Imagine not even being on the bubble…and then having all of those ACC powers still ahead. No wonder Jim Boeheim wanted to get this out of the way. He wants to hide in a cave until next year.

Growing up a New Yorker (as a true S.O.B…son of a butcher!) in Mt. Vernon, I’m embarrassed that one of the state’s premier basketball programs would do such a thing. But, I’m not all that surprised. Boeheim takes every edge he can find. He doesn’t care what you or I think.

And, frankly, it might get the attention of his players! Maybe they’ll rise up and show he should have had more confidence in them. Maybe all of those good teams I just listed won’t take Syracuse seriously enough in the second half of the league slate. Maybe this will turn the Orange into moneymakers instead of moneyburners out here in Las Vegas.

I can assure you I’ll be paying very close attention to Saturday’s game at Pittsburgh, and then home games with Duke and Louisville in the middle of the month. This team may throw in the towel completely, or rise to the occasion with a shock the world mentality now that they’re mad. Oddsmakers have had serious troubles pegging this team….and it might be about to get even worse for them.

There are a lot of great stories across the college basketball landscape right now. And, the great thing about ESPN’s obsessive hyping of teams like Duke and North Carolina is that a lot of these stories are going unreported. When was the last time you heard something about the Mountain West…where UNLV and Reno play right here in my back yard? When was the last time you heard about any mid-major? ESPN is stumped because ACC leader Virginia is boring, the Big 10 is struggling (outside of great Wisconsin), and the Big 12 has been a disappointment below Kansas (remember when Texas was going to win the league…the Horns are currently in eighth place!) A lot of these weeknight “marquee” matchups don’t deserve to have their names in neon.

I’m not going to tell you what mid-major stories I’m currently following because I want to protect that information for my clients. If a well-known team like Syracuse….in an overhyped conference like the ACC…can go 1-8-1 ATS over 10 games…you know that oddsmakers are even more likely to miss developments elsewhere. This is a great time to be a basketball handicapper! If you haven’t been betting…it’s a great time to get started!

Football is finished…but the winning is just beginning in basketball. Don’t be like Syracuse and ban yourself because you’re afraid of embarrassment. The money is there for the taking in major TV conferences and off-the-radar leagues that know they have to play great to get attention. This is not a time to sit and wait for the Dance.
