Wayne Root: Will There Be Upsets in This Weekend’s NFL Wildcard Action?

For many years, a tried and true handicapping system worked great in the NFL playoffs. You simply BET THE DOGS during Wildcard Weekend, then BET THE FAVORITES every week afterward. The league’s elite were so great that they won blowouts given the perks of home field advantage a bye week. Everyone else was so even, relatively speaking, that Wildcard weekend usually went to the dogs.

Do you remember what happened a year ago?
*Indianapolis (+1.5) beat Kansas City 45-44
*New Orleans (+3) beat Philadelphia 26-24
*San Diego (+6.5) beat Cincinnati 27-10
*Green Bay (+3.5) lost to San Francisco 23-20, covering the spread

Last year’s underdogs went 3-1 straight up and 4-0 ATS. Sometimes this old school underdog system still bares its teeth!

That may or may not happen this season. There are some reasons to be skeptical about this weekend’s dogs. Let’s take a quick look at those:

*Arizona (+6.5) will probably be forced to go with its #3 quarterback Ryan Lindley. Drew Stanton is a game-time decision at last report. Stanton will be rusty and banged up if he’s able to play. Will WAYNE ALLYN ROOT take a team with a poor quarterback? Maybe that’s the best way to SHOCK THE WORLD! But, you longtime readers know I like taking underdogs who can score enough to win the game for you. Arizona isn’t exactly in that wheelhouse at the moment.

*Baltimore (+3) looked awful two weeks ago in Houston, and then didn’t play well until very late vs. Cleveland last week. They’re not exactly peaking at the right time in terms of carrying momentum into the playoffs. I do like Coach John Harbaugh in smash mouth situations generally speaking. But, this isn’t a team that inspires “upset” confidence in extreme fashion. Wasn’t Gary Kubiak supposed to help return this offense to championship form? Maybe the best for Baltimore is yet to come.

*Cincinnati (+3.5) is coming off a very physical loss to Pittsburgh last Sunday Night. Now they have to play on the road again in Indianapolis. It’s telling that the betting markets have them getting more than a field goal. That’s a strike against the Bengals right there. Cincinnati’s disappointing playoff history of late is another strike. How could I take the Bengals as a road dog this year when they lost by 17 as a home favorite last January?! Well, the fact that Indy’s defense has played some horrible games could turn the Bengals into a dangerous underdog offense. Mixed signals here.

*Detroit (+6.5) is another road dog that had to play a huge divisional road game last week…LOST…then has to open the postseason on the road this week. The good news for the Lions is that they will have Ndamukung Suh in uniform because he won his one-game appeal of a suspension. And, they at least catch Dallas at home, where the Cowboys have been surprisingly inconsistent this season. But, the market has the Lions as the week’s biggest underdog…the team least likely to score an upset.

Now, I’m not going to tell you here in a web article where I’m going to zig, and where I’m going to zag this weekend. You all know I generally shade my action toward underdogs…but you also know I don’t play exclusively underdogs. My PINNACLE play this week could just as easily be a favorite as a dog.

My points of priority this weekend:
*Find underdogs who are capable of scoring points in the fourth quarter
*Find which favorites have exploitable weaknesses
*Find advantages at the head coach position

I’m not going to get any more specific than that because I plan some very big plays for my clients this weekend. I think I’ve camouflaged things well enough. I’m confident WAYNE ALLYN ROOT will be making headlines once again!

I’ll be back with you early next week with either a basketball or NFL article. This is a great time to be a Las Vegas bettor because there’s so much going on. I hope those of you who have been sitting on the sidelines regarding basketball will think about that sport now that the bowls are mostly over. Vegas advantage players don’t leave money on the table!

I’m the only man in the sports betting industry with a star on the Walk of Fame. That’s because I win the games that matter in all sports…and have been doing so for decades! If an oddsmaker ever gets a star, his will naturally be a few steps behind mine.
