Can Jets Shock a Skeptical Nation?

Can Jets Shock a Skeptical Nation?

By Wayne Root:

The New York Jets have gotten more negative press than any other NFL team the past few months. THEY DESERVED IT! The 2013 has the look of a debacle waiting to happen. Game One of that debacle kicks off Sunday at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. out here in Las Vegas) when the Jets host the Tampa Bay Bucs as underdogs of 3.5 points.

  • The Jets are starting a rookie quarterback who's done nothing but play poorly through the Preseason and early practices. Plus, Geno Smith was one of those QB's in college who posted great stats vs. bad defenses, but was inconsistent at best when playing top opposition. Now, he'll only be facing NFL caliber defenses going forward.

  • Jets' ownership, management, and the coaching staff all seem to be on different pages in a variety of decision-making areas. The only NFL team to win like that was the Dallas Cowboys back in the Jimmy Johnson era. And, that was because they had a team of Hall-of-Famers. This Jets team doesn't have much big time talent, particularly on offense. They might not be better than 7-9 or 8-8 if everyone was on the same page AND they weren't starting a rookie quarterback.

  • The Jets' fan base is ready to revolt...and a home opener is the perfect place to make your presence felt. If the game starts poorly...the locals are going to be loud long into the day and night.

It's been many years since either New York NFL team has entered the season under such a dark cloud. What better scenario for a SHOCK THE NATION story to develop!

I'm the documented KING OF UPSETS because I've had more documented successful upset calls than any other handicapper in history. I know when underdogs are ready to make a statement. I know when they're just going to lie there and take a beating.

Clearly, the Las Vegas betting markets see this as a beating. The Jets opened as a home underdog to a non-playoff team when the Week One lines went up this past summer. Then, the closer we got to game time...the more people bet on the other team! Tampa Bay...a non-playoff team who closed last season now laying more than a field goal on the road to the Jets.

I can't tell you here in my NFL article whether I'm on the Jets or not. I need to project the information for my clients. Obviously, with my roots in New York (I was born as a true S.O.B. in Mt. Vernon, NY...son of a butcher!), I'll have several major releases on or against the Jets and Giants. I will tell you what I believe the potential mistakes are here for the market in this game:

  • Oddsmakers and bettors are paying too much attention to what's wrong with the Jets, and not enough attention to what's wrong with Tampa Bay. It's possible that these teams are closer to being "equally lousy" based on how the Bucs played late last season. Head coach Greg Schiano seemed to lose many of his players. He's still there!

  • Oddsmakers and bettors don't seem to be thinking about the possible look-ahead factor for Tampa Bay. They have a huge divisional home game next week against New Orleans. If the Bucs are reading all the newspaper stories about how helpless the Jets are, while thinking about the Saints...they could get caught flat as a pancake here.

  • Geno Smith is tired of hearing and reading about how horrible he's been. The weather is still nice in New York this time of year (and may be ideal Sunday), which means he'll be throwing in god conditions against what might be a flat, soft defense. I'm not optimistic about Smith having a big season. He might not be a disaster out of the gate...and that's enough to cover a home dog spread.

I'm very confident that you, the guys in suits in the studios, and the guys behind the counter at Vegas sportsbooks are going to be SHOCKED by that they see during Week One of the NFL season. That means it's time for YOU to go to W.A.R alongside WAYNE ALLYN ROOT!
