Positioning For NBA Playoffs Key For Handicappers

By Wayne Allyn Root

You longtime readers know I grew up in Mt. Vernon, New York as a true S.O.B.  That's Son of A Butcher! I still follow the New York teams very closely because of my roots. The New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets are currently battling for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference brackets.

The Knicks have won EIGHT STRAIGHT games to grab a virtual stranglehold on at least the #3 seed. Brooklyn has been unable to keep up, which leaves them in the #4 spot.

Why does that matter when #3 and #4 aren't likely to play each other? It's obvious. You don't want to be #4 because that means a second round matchup against the powerful Miami Heat! If you can finish third, you'll miss the Heat until the Eastern Conference finals if you can make it that far (Indiana is currently #2 in the East).

When handicapping the final few weeks of NBA basketball, you need to really stay on top of motivation for each and every team.

  • Some teams are in MUST WIN situations right now

  • Some teams are playing hard for playoff positioning

  • Some teams are coasting without much to play for

  • Some teams have thrown in the towel on the season

  • Some teams are TRYING TO LOSE because of draft positioning

There's nothing worse than investing your hard earned money on a team that takes the floor and just goes through the motions. There's nothing better than cashing an easy blowout winner because you recognized a motivation mismatch that oddsmakers couldn't do anything about.

Here's a brief rundown of who's battling for what in the Playoff picture.

IN THE EAST

  • New York is trying to chase down Indiana for the #2 seed. That would mean home court advantage if the two advance past the first round. Indiana is doing its best to try and hold them off.

  • Brooklyn is now unlikely to catch the Knicks for #3, and must focus on securing home court advantage in its likely first round series against Atlanta. The Hawks are trying to catch the Nets from behind so they can have home court in the first round.

  • Boston and Milwaukee are fighting to secure the #7 spot in the standings, because #8 will be stuck playing Miami in the first round...and no team wants that!

IN THE WEST

  • San Antonio and Oklahoma City are battling for the #1 seed in the West, which would mean home court advantage in a head-to-head meeting for the Western crown.

  • Denver, the LA Clippers, and Memphis are all neck-and-neck right now for the 3-4-5 spots. There are no easy draws for these guys. But, finishing fifth really gets the worst of it because that means not having home court advantage in the first round...and then a pathway that leads through the #1 seed in the second round.

  • Golden State and Houston are trying to maintain their locks on the 6-7 spots. There's not much of a difference between the two bracket locales in the big picture because it's a pick-your-poison situation once you're safely into the draw. Do you want to play Oklahoma City or red hot Denver?

  • Utah is in a life or death struggle with the LA Lakers and Dallas (the latter two play each other late Tuesday Night on TNT) for the eighth and final seed in the West.

Frankly...that's MORE teams than usual taking the NBA seriously this late in the season! I have my eye on a few games through the week that my clients and I will attack very aggressively. There are also several "tankers" who we might be going against because the market is having trouble pricing them correctly.

You can always purchase my best plays (in all sports!) right here at the website with your credit card. If you have any questions about which of my programs best suits your individual needs, call my handicapping office at 1-877-766-8946.

I'm the only handicapper with a star on the "Walk of Fame" here in Las Vegas. If an oddsmaker ever gets one, his star will naturally be a few steps behind mine! We're ahead of the game in the NBA, in MLB, and certainly will be for the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament this weekend. That means it's time for YOU go to W.A.R. alongside WAYNE ALLYN ROOT!
