Oregon Ducks' #2 BCS Ranking at Risk

Oregon Ducks' #2 BCS Ranking at Risk

By Wayne Root:

You could say that the 2012 college football season really begins Thursday Night for the Oregon Ducks. They're currently #2 in the BCS rankings behind Alabama. But, they've had a home friendly schedule against inferior opposition. The road to the National Championship starts in Tempe against the fired up Arizona State Sun Devils in a game to be televised nationally by ESPN.

Here's what's ahead for Oregon:
Thursday: at Arizona State (duel in the desert)
October 27: vs. Colorado (only gift game left)
November 3: at Southern Cal (#10 in the BCS rankings)
November 10: at California (Bears on a roll)
November 17: vs. Stanford (#20 in the BCS rankings)
November 24: at Oregon State (#8 in the BCS rankings)

Yes, next week...Oregon will be favored by a million over Colorado and will probably get there. Otherwise, that's a murderer's row of Pac 12 teams who are playing well this season and would love nothing better than to cause some BCS Chaos (and Pac 12 Chaos!) by sticking a loss on the Ducks.

  • Arizona State will have a packed house for Thursday's TV game...and a notable home field advantage facing a team from the Pacific Northwest in the desert. You know new head coach Todd Graham would love a statement victory for the Sun Devils faithful.

  • Southern Cal was #1 in the Preseason rankings, and still has a chance to climb back into the BCS picture if they can knock off Oregon and run the table. Remember that USC stunned Oregon last year on the road as a big underdog.

  • California has picked up its form in recent weeks...taking undefeated Ohio State down to the wire not too long ago in Columbus, then winning big for me over UCLA for a Game of the Year (I've been on fire all season in the Pac 12!). Cal catches Oregon in an ideal schedule spot...in a letdown after the big USC game, and playing their third road game in four weeks.

  • Stanford already has a win over USC and what should have been a win over Notre Dame on its resume. They'd have to spring the upset on the road. But, they will be facing an Oregon team that will be very tired at kickoff. If Oregon is still undefeated at that time, it means they will have strung together road wins over the teams we just talked about without any time off. Oh, this is also a lookahead before the state rivalry game against Oregon State.

  • Oregon State is suddenly a power! It's too early to map the race out with complete confidence. But, it's possible that Oregon/Oregon State will be for the Pac 12 North title.  The Ducks will be playing their fifth tough opponent in six weeks, and their fourth ROAD game in that same time period. If Oregon can get through this slate unscathed, they will have truly earned a shot at #1 Alabama in the BCS Championship game.

If Oregon makes it through unscathed, they would then have to play in the Pac 12 Championship game too (possibly a rematch with USC). BRUTAL! The real season starts Thursday, and Oregon better be ready for a two-month war.

I mentioned earlier that I'm having a great year in the Pac 12. That shouldn't surprise anybody. Las Vegas might as well be part of California given local sports interest. I follow the Pac 12 very closely on the satellite screens in my home theatre and through the local media. I called for Stanford's upset of USC. I gave Cal over UCLA Game of the Year status. I can assure you right now that I will be having at least one major earth-shattering release involving the Oregon Ducks within the next few weeks.

Maybe I'm calling for an upset tonight. Maybe I'll support this fast break approach of Oregon when they're fresh off a bye week...then bide my time until making an upset call against the Ducks with Cal, Stanford, or Oregon State down the road.
