Giants Sick of Jets Coverage

Wayne Root: Giants Sick of Jets Coverage

The great thing for the New York Giants about Saturday Night's game against the New York Jets is that the defending Super Bowl champions will finally get some national media coverage! ESPN and other news sources have been so Tebow crazy this summer that the only way for the best football team in New York to get any attention is for them to play the worst football team in New York.

Last week I talked about this right before the Jets took on the Bengals in a game that was nationally televised by the NFL Network. Since then, things have gotten even worse! ESPN made a fool of themselves spending a day this week helping Tim Tebow celebrate his birthday. You should have heard the laughter in the Vegas sportsbooks all day. As bad as things got during the Brett Favre melodrama, SportsCenter wasn't singing "Happy Birthday" to him!

Tonight's Giants/Jets game will also be shown live on NFLN. So I wanted to come back and discuss the coming season from the Giants perspective. It's rare for a defending league champion to be "underrated." That just might be the case this year with the Giants.

It's important to remember that:

  • New York was ravaged by injuries last year, particularly among their top defensive players. They started to get healthy (healthier anyway) just in time for the playoffs. And that's when they caught fire against Atlanta, Green Bay, San Francisco, and the New England Patriots. New York went 9-7 in the regular season because they were shorthanded. They went 4-0 against good teams in the playoffs once the lineup was closer to normal. Don't let that 9-7 fool you!

  • New York played what was rated as the toughest schedule in pro football last year by the USA Today. So, even when they were going 9-7 during the regular season...they were doing that against a killer schedule. They were better than the 9-7 made it look in TWO different ways because of injuries and a tough schedule.

  • The media loves Michael Vick, and will go out of its way to hype both him and the Philadelphia Eagles. The media is also still in love with the Dallas Cowboys, though that's starting to wear off. Even though the Giants play in the media capital of the world...they're only the third most-hyped team in their own four-team division! That will cause many to underrate this team once again simply because they're not getting as much media coverage as you'd expect.

Now...I'm not saying that the Giants are going to repeat as NFC and league champs. There are several good candidates...and many playoff games come down to being true coin flips anyway. It's tough to catch most of the key breaks in close games two years in a row. But, I can tell you this. My sources back in my native state (I was born in Mt. Vernon, NY as a true S.O.B...son of a butcher!) are telling me that this team has a real chip on its shoulder right now because of the lack of respect they're getting as TWO-TIME recent champions.

If the defense can stay healthy, the Giants will once again be on the short list of potential champs. Stop thinking of these guys as a Cinderella who got to go to the ball twice. They have a top notch defense when healthy. They have an experienced quarterback who's learned how to keep his cool under pressure. They have a head coach who doesn't get rattled and push the panic button. All this may help them avoid the traditional "Super Bowl Letdown" that afflicts so many champions.

I'll definitely be watching Giants-Jets closely on NFL Network tonight (7 p.m. ET, 4 p.m. out here in Las Vegas). I've already circled September games involving BOTH teams that are likely to inspire very big plays for my clients and I. Maybe I'll have something big in TONIGHT'S game too. You'll have to purchase my Saturday slate or my full Preseason package to find out. You can do that right here at the website with your credit card.
