Big Challenge Brewing for Jeremy Lin

Big Challenge Brewing for Jeremy Lin

By the KING of Las Vegas WAYNE ALLYN ROOT

Just before the All-Star Break, I warned Jeremy Lin that his trip to Miami was going to HURT! Things went even worse for him than I had imagined...as he was 1 for 11 shooting from the floor, and he committed 8 turnovers. The Miami defense showed Lin what a STRONG defense will do when motivated to stop somebody.

Don't get me wrong. I'm still a Jeremy Lin fan. He's brought a buzz to New York...and that's where my roots are. He's also doing wonders for the reputation of Ivy League basketball. As handicappers and legal sports bettors, we have to keep our heads clear. We have to stay ahead of the curve. That means:

  • Betting on the Knicks versus soft defenses because they're well suited now to attack from all over the floor (which you saw vs. tired Cleveland the other night).

  • Betting against the Knicks versus strong defenses because the best defenses will focus on Lin and complete disrupt New York's rhythm.

  • Monitoring the ability of Lin to handle in-season fatigue. He's had it easy so far, jumping into the race with fresh legs when everyone else was tired...just at a point in the schedule when the Knicks got to play a bunch of weak teams.

That last point is likely to loom large during the month of March. New York has only played once since the All-Star Break, which means they're as fresh as a team could possibly be today heading into their nationally televised game in Boston. Things are about to get tough, with FIVE back-to-backs from now through March 24th.

Here's what's on tap:

Today: at Boston
Tuesday at Dallas
Wednesday at San Antonio (back-to-back)
Friday: at Milwaukee
Sunday: versus Philadelphia
Monday 3/12: at Chicago (brutal back-to-back)
Wednesday 3/14: versus Portland
Friday 3/16: versus Indiana
Saturday 3/17: at Indiana (back-to-back, fifth game in seven days)
Tuesday 3/20: versus Toronto
Wednesday 3/21: at Philadelphia (back-to-back, seventh game in 11 days)
Friday 3/23: at Toronto
Saturday 3/24: versus Detroit (back-to-back, ninth game in 14 days, 13th game in 3 weeks)

Not every game is brutal, because Toronto's sprinkled in there. But, nine of the 13 games will be played against playoff contenders. And, you can see how grueling the trek is going to be due to all the back-to-backs, and how they stack up at the end of the run.

We'll know a lot more about Jeremy Lin's true abilities, his longterm future in the league, and the championship potential of the Knicks by the end of this month. See if you can stay ahead of the oddsmakers as he either announces his greatness, or shows that he's already hit his ceiling.

I'm definitely looking at Knicks/Celtics as a possibility for my Sunday clients. But, the schedules LOADED with big games, and I'm not going to force something in an early TV game just because I grew up in New York. If there's an edge, we'll play it. That's also true for:

Miami at the LA Lakers on ABC
Chicago at Philadelphia on ESPN
Denver at San Antonio on ESPN
Kentucky at Florida on CBS
Ohio State at Michigan State on CBS
Purdue at Indiana on the Big 10 Network
The Missouri Valley Championship on CBS

This is the best Sunday card we've had this year in basketball. It's a great way to launch your way into MARCH MADNESS if you've been dragging your heels. I know many of you are just now getting back into the swing of things after a post-Super Bowl break. You love betting the tournaments. And, the big time events like the Big East tournament (Tuesday), the Pac 12 and Big 12 tournaments (Wednesday), and the Big Ten, ACC, and SEC tournaments (Thursday) are hours away. If you're a true sports fan, this may be your single favorite week on the whole sports calendar!

Jeremy Lin is about to find out that regular season can be a grind. Making a living as a sports bettor in Las Vegas is a year round grind for most. I conquered the grind many years ago and it's been all gravy since. That's why I'm the only handicapper with a star on the Vegas"Walk of Fame." That's why I'm THE KING OF LAS VEGAS! That's why it's time for YOU to go to W.A.R. alongside WAYNE ALLYN ROOT!
