Is Missouri a Must-Win For Texas?

Wayne Root: Is Missouri a Must-Win For Texas?

The Texas Longhorns are on the verge of falling off the NCAA Tournament bubble as they get ready for Monday Night's nationally televised home game against Missouri. Saturday's loss at Baylor dropped Texas to 3-5 in Big 12 play, and 13-8 overall.

Those aren't the kinds of records that impress the selection committee. And, in fact, the most recent Bracketology assessments show Texas just missing out on an at-large invitation.

A loss to highly respected Missouri would make things even worse...3-6 in league action and 13-9 overall. It's a bit early to say that Texas absolutely, positively HAS to win Monday Night if they want to go Dancing this year. There's still time to get back to .500 in the Big 12 and impress in the conference tournament. But, clearly a win would help right was has been a sinking ship.

  • Texas has dropped four of its last five games. Even though that stretch has come against a brutal schedule (road games at Missouri, Kansas State, and Baylor, with a home loss to Kansas), it's established that Texas isn't as good as the top teams in the Big 12.

  • Texas may end up in a battle with Iowa State for the final Big 12 Dance entry. Those two teams have already split regular season meetings. But, Iowa State just knocked off Kansas at home, something Texas couldn't do. If the NCAA Tournament were held today, Iowa State would probably be in, Texas would probablybe out.

  • The most recent non-conference effort that everyone remembers was the 82-63 blowout loss at North Carolina that was never even a ballgame. That's the same North Carolina team that was crushed at Florida State. Texas really needs a big TV win in a Big Monday slot to erase that blowout from everyone's memory.

  • Texas has been a disappointment in so many recent Big Dances that the selection committee may have seen enough. Texas couldn't dominate when Kevin Durant was there! There's a "boy who cried wolf" mentality that's starting to surround this Texas program. They just never end up being as good as the media says they'll be. Everywhere you look, there are more dark clouds hanging over Texas' heads.

I love handicapping games like this because emotions are likely to play such a huge factor. Las Vegas oddsmakers will put a number on the game that reflects the talent on the floor. WAYNE ALLYN ROOT will be on top of the intangibles that could make the game blow up in either direction. If Texas is down in the dumps, they could fall behind early and never get back up off the canvas. But, if the Longhorns are sick and tired of hearing about how they're not good enough to compete, viewers might see their best performance of the season Monday Night on ESPN.

Handicappers must focus on emotions, because emotions trigger extreme results that earn BIG PROFITS against overmatched Vegas spreads.

I paid very close attention to both of these teams in Saturday action. And, I also watched West Virginia-Syracuse and Pittsburgh-Georgetown either live or on tape to get ready for Game One of ESPN's Big Monday doubleheader. The third game on the main board Monday is Princeton at Pennsylvania in the Ivy League. You regulars know I went to school in the Ivy League. Even with the light schedule, I can assure you this is going to be a big night for WAYNE ALLYN ROOT!

My game day releases always go up a few hours before the first tip. Have your credit cards handy when you visit the website this afternoon. Or, call my handicapping office at 1-877-766-8946. Be sure to ask about the Super Bowl when you call. It's easy to add my Super Bowl Extravaganza to any basketball package. That's now less than a week away!

I love being in Las Vegas during Super Bowl week. There's a buzz in all the sportsbooks. The city knows there will be an onslaught of visitors over the weekend so everyone's moving at a fever pitch. Sports bettors know it's the most important week of the calendar year because it's make or break time with your biggest bets.

I'M THE KING OF LAS VEGAS because I win when it matters most!

Make sure you spend this week going to W.A.R. alongside WAYNE ALLYN ROOT!
