Handicapping Big Mondays

Handicapping Big Mondays

If you've been betting sports legally for any period of time, you've probably heard that MONDAY is the most important betting day of all. For most people, it finishes off the week in terms of their personal ledger. How they perform on Monday usually determines if it's a winning week, or a losing week. If they collect, or if they owe.

I'm THE KING OF LAS VEGAS because I know how to win when it's time to win!

And, that means I know how to win:

*Monday Night Football in the Fall
*Big Monday College Hoops in the Winter
*Monday Night Baseball through the Summer

It's late January, so obviously the focus right now is on those weekly Big Monday doubleheaders on ESPN...where a marquee game in the Big East is followed by a marquee game in the Big 12. There are certain keys I always follow when trying to find winners for my clients. I'm going to share a few of those with you today.

  • First of all, because I'm also THE KING OF UPSETS, I take a very serious look at the underdog to see if they're ready to play a peak game. This is common on "Big Monday" because it's such a big deal to the kids to be in showcase TV games. Maybe this isn't as big a factor as it used to be because so many games are televised these days. And, there are certainly a few teams who are on TV so much that the thrill wears off. But, for SOME teams, particularly well-positioned underdogs, a Big Monday appearance is going to bring out one of their best performances of the season.

My best SHOCK THE SYSTEM bets come on unheralded teams playing over their heads because they're fired up to do so. Maybe Cincinnati or Texas A&M this week will rise to the occasion with a big effort.

  • Secondly, I look at what happened two days earlier in Saturday action. I think it's very difficult to ask college teams to play two great games in a row in January...and I'm not going to bet on a team that played great just 48 hours earlier. I'm much more interested in asking a team to bounce back from a bad Saturday game. I want my money on teams who are playing with a chip on their shoulder! Will Syracuse have a chip on its shoulder after losing to Notre Dame?

  • Thirdly, I look for additional motivational factors like revenge. Now, it's too early this year to have "in-season" revenge yet. That will become a factor soon though when everyone reaches the second phase of their conference schedules. In the first phase, I go back to last year to look for possible revenge scenarios from the regular season or the conference tournament. Big events like a Big Monday appearance will magnify all possible emotions. Coaches will have their veins popping on their necks in pre-game speeches and on the sideline. The crowd will be ready to jump in at a moment's notice. Any lingering bad blood from earlier seasons is going to matter. Be sure you're aware of it.

  • My final point today involves home court advantage. I just mentioned the crowd wanting to jump in. The only people who love being on TV more than the players are the kids in the cheering section who know the cameras will be panning them all night. For a team that's always on TV, maybe this isn't a very big deal...and there won't be any additional home court edge. But, for a team that's on ESPN less often, or only gets a Monday slot every couple of years...it's much more special. I will allow an extra 1 or 2 points for home court advantage if I'm confident the crowd is going to respond to the cameras. This will magnify every positive for the home team...and any negative for the road team.

Football is over except for the Super Bowl...which means it's time to really bear down in the baskets. From now through early March, BIG MONDAY is going to be a very important part of your wagering week. If it's important in Vegas, then THE KING OF LAS VEGAS must be your source for winners!
