Wayne Root: Bubble Talk

A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM
By the KING of Las Vegas WAYNE ALLYN ROOT

IT'S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START THINKING ABOUT TEAMS "ON THE BUBBLE"

I've often told you that one of the most important keys for finding SHOCK THE SYSTEM results in all sports is to study motivation.

You want to go against teams who are likely to be flat, tired, distracted, or otherwise disinsterested.

You want to invest in teams who are likely to be fired up, furious, or otherwise emphasizing getting a great result RIGHT NOW.

When it comes to college basketball, there's no greater motivator than a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament. That's what many of these kids dream of growing up. Sure, there are a handful of one-and-done guys who are more focused on earning a paycheck in the NBA. But, the vast majority of college players won't make it that far. An appearance in the Big Dance would be the highlight of their basketball careers.

In the past, teams would start thinking about the bubble in the days leading up to Selection Sunday. You'd want to close the regular season with a couple of wins, and hopefully do well in your conference tournament. But, ever since ESPN's website started running bracket projections all season long, college kids can now get a very good sense of where they stand as early as late January. And, we all know how much time college kids spend on computers!

The actual invitations generally match the Bracketology projections very closely. If ESPN says you're in right now, you're probably in. If they say you're out, you'd better sweat.

I expect to see some motivated efforts from the following teams in these next few weeks.

LAST FOUR IN (at press time, in alphabetical order)
Boston College
Memphis
Michigan State
Richmond

LAST FOUR OUT
Alabama-Birmingham
Butler
Washington State
Wichita State

NEXT FOUR OUT
Clemson
Colorado State
Gonzaga
Oklahoma State

I think it's important to look at those dozen teams NOW because the kids are looking at the bubble spots, but the media and oddsmakers really aren't yet. In the closing days of the season, TV announcers can't shut up about the bubble! Everyone's talking about who's in a "must win" situation, and that can influence the line because bettors love taking teams who have to win. But, NOW, nobody's talking about it yet. The players know what's at stake...but the line hasn't been warped against bubble teams yet.

I'm not suggesting all 12 will be great bets every time they take the floor. Each has a meaningful weakness or they'd be higher up in the ratings. But there will be situations where they've drawn an opponent that's flat, tired, distracted, or depressed about a recent slump. THEN you can consider stepping up aggressively with a Las Vegas bet. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a great performance from at least eight of those 12 teams...at least once in the next two weeks. And, those performances will be happening against Vegas lines that weren't influenced by media hype in a way that would take away value.

I'll definitely be posting some very special plays for you in the coming days based on my read of motivation in college basketball. The fun starts Thursday with a major release from one of my favorite handicapping conferences. Friday brings a strong Ivy League play. Most of you probably know I went to school in the Ivy League, and know these teams like the back of my hand. Saturday will bring another GAME OF THE YEAR selection that I think is even stronger than last Saturday's monster win on Wisconsin over Ohio State.
