NFL Wild Card Weekend -- The Spread Facts

THE JIM SEZ MID-WEEK UPDATE - NFL WILD CARD POINTSPREAD GOODIES PLUS, WE'RE EYEBALLING A COUPLE OF KEY COLLEGE B-BALL GAMES ON THE BUSY THURSDAY NITE CARD

Here's a few facts/figures you need to know as we head into this week's NFL Wild Card Round Playoff games in Kansas City, Los Angeles, Jacksonville and New Orleans ...

NFL Betting Favorites finished the 2017 regular season at 131-110-1 ATS (against the spread) with 4 Pick 'Em games tossed into the mix - so that means chalk sides covered at a .544 winning rate. Not bad at all if you are a favorite's guy/gal. A $100 per-play wager on all the NFL Favorites this year would've netted you a grand total of exactly $1000 ... just thought you might like to know!

Meanwhile, totals players should know that "overs" went just 117-136-3 (a .462 winning rate) as prices were hiked up over years past and savvy "under" players cashed in. Note that in the final four regular-season weekends of play, "under" players went a spiffy 41-21-2 for a terrific .661 winning rate.

Now, let's toss you some pointspread knowledge when it comes to the eight teams in action this Wild Card Weekend and keep in mind we'll be posting previews of all Four (4) games in the next couple of Jim Sez columns:

On Saturday, it's ...
TENNESSEE at KANSAS CITY - The KC Chiefs roll into this clash on a four-game ATS winning streak; the Titans are 12-26-2 vig-wise as underdogs since the start of the 2014 season.

ATLANTA at LOS ANGELES RAMS - The Rams cranked out a 6-4 ATS mark in non-NFC West games this year after having gone a collective 5-12-3 spreadwise outside the division in 2015-16; the Falcons are 2-6 against the odds away this year after going 7-2 ATS away last Super Bowl season.

On Sunday, it's ...
BUFFALO at JACKSONVILLE - The Bills are back in the post-season following a 17-year drought (what, you haven't heard that a gazillion times the past week!) but did you know this AFC East squad is 6-3-1 ATS outside the division this year? The Jaguars are 6-5 ATS as favs this season but just 15-24 ATS as chalk-eaters the past 10 years.

CAROLINA at NEW ORLEANS - Believe it or not, the Saints are 13-5 spreadwise when playing fellow NFC South squads the past three seasons; the Panthers are 0-6 ATS in their last half-dozen head-to-head showdowns with New Orleans.

COLLEGE HOOPS - THE THURSDAY TV ACTION
Let's hit the hardwood on this first Thursday of the New Year - here's a couple of games on the "telly" that we'll be checkin' out:

MARYLAND (13-3, 2-1 Big 10) at #1 MICHIGAN STATE (14-1, 2-0 Big 10) - 8 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1
Sparty isn't just board-work and defense these days, you know: Tom Izzo's crew has won its last four games in a row by a minimum of 42 points and note the Spartans have scored at least 102 points in all four of those games - if Miles Bridges (17 ppg) gets into the open floor here against a defensively-sound Maryland bunch than M-State will roll again.

UCLA (11-3, 2-0 Pac-12) at STANFORD (6-8, 0-1 Pac-12) - 10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1
Neither of these proud Pac-12 teams are among the top 25 in the polls but that doesn't diminish the matchup here - after all, the Uclans (yes, we know it's early) are tied for first place and Steve Alford's squad has a bit of momentum after freshman Kris Wilkes poured in 21 points in a New Year's Eve 74-53 win/cover against Washington.

NOTE: There's NFL Wild Card Round Previews Plus College Football Championship Game Notes too in the next Jim Sez.
