NFL WEEK 14 RE-CAPS
First things first here and that's NFL Week 14 Betting Favorites enter the MNF game at 8-6 ATS with one push (see Detroit's 24-21 win in Tampa Bay) and so the season-long spread stats now see NFL Betting Favs at 105-93-7 with a pair of Pick 'Em games - that's a healthy .530 winning rate for the chalkies.
The funny thing (or, not so funny thing!) regarding the Week 14 action is that Buffalo - a 3.5-point snowy home favorite against Indianapolis - and Green Bay (a 2.5-point fav at woe-be-gone Cleveland) both won/covered with overtime touchdowns and that Packers' TD was an absolute killer to anyone backing the Browns who blew a two-TD fourth-quarter lead.
In other NFL Week 14 News/Notes ...
The apparent season-ending knee injury suffered by Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz - on a play that was called back for a holding penalty - really has the whole league bummin' today as this second-year star is one of the NFL's bright lights and how about the fact he aired a short scoring strike to WR Alshon Jeffery just four plays after having his left knee injured on an end zone/goal-line collision? ...
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger threw for more than one of the city's three area codes - that's 412, 724 and 878 - when he completed 44-of-66 aerials for 506 yards and two TDs (and no INTs) in a wild 39-38 comeback non-cover win against the 6-point underdog Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night. Roethlisberger shredded a secondary that simply gave way too much cushion to WR Antonio Brown (11 catches for 213 yards) all night long but it was Pittsburgh's wobbly LB Ryan Shazier-less defense that has to concern head coach Mike Tomlin and Company. Shazier was very much on the minds of the Steelers just six nights after he suffered a scary spinal injury at Cincy but - as NBC game analyst Cris Collinsworth pointed out - the Steelers' linebackers were a weak link without Shazier as Baltimore RB Alex Collins (120 yards rushing) juked 'em silly ...
Okay, so what were the odds back in early October that the Los Angeles Chargers would be sitting atop the AFC West following Week 14 play? The Chargers were 0-4 before righting their season with a 27-22 win at the New York Giants - yes, the game in which the entire Giants' wide receiving corps went down with injuries - while the Kansas City were a once-upon-a-time 5-and-oh squad that was threatening to run away with the division. In Sunday's easy-as-pie 30-13 win/cover against 6-point underdog Washington, the Bolts relied on a 319-yard/two-TD showing from born-again QB Philip Rivers but a defense that surrendered just one offensive touchdown was brilliant. Note the Chargers have allowed just 29 total points in their last three games and one of those TDs was yesterday's late-game pick six for the 'Skins.
Hats off to Oklahoma Sooners' QB Baker Mayfield for winning this year's Heisman Trophy - his 82.5 percent of first-place votes should have been even higher, if you ask us - but let's take a sneak peek at the 2018 Heisman Trophy and declare three main candidates:
First would be Stanford RB Bruce Love who finished second in this year's field. If Love can steer clear of ankle woes, he's got the momentum already built up from this season;
Next is Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor who was hanging around our "top five" for much of this year. Taylor needs to score more TDs but he could be a 2,000-yard back and we figure he'll probably be in the discussion from the start;
Here's a dark horse for coveted award: Ohio State DE Nick Bosa could well be front-and-center for the '18 Heisman providing he sports double-digit sacks heading into next year's game versus Michigan.
