NFL WEEK 12 -
On Thanksgiving Day, it's ...
MINNESOTA (8-2) at DETROIT (6-4) - 12:30 p.m. ET, Fox
In case you didn't know, the Detroit Lions - always your living room guest on Thanksgiving Day - are a composite 37-38-2 SU (straight-up) on this terrific holiday and so a win here against the Minny Vikings gets 'em to .500 all-time ... just thought you'd like to know! More importantly for Jim Caldwell's club is keeping this born-again offense on track as the Lions have averaged 31.7 points per game in recent back-to-back-to-back wins against Green Bay, Cleveland and Chicago with QB Matthew Stafford keying last week's 27-24 win/push in Chitown with a pair of scoring strikes.
Minnesota lost 16-13 at Detroit last Thanksgiving Day - yes, a rarity that a visiting side plays back-to-back years on this holiday - but right now a red-hot QB Case Keenum and a defense that's yielded 17 points or less in seven of its last eight games is proving to be a major handful for any/all opponents.
Spread Stats - Minnesota zooms into this holiday showdown riding a hot-hot-hot five-game ATS (against the spread) winning streak and note the Vikings are a collective 9-5 vig-wise in their last 14 head-to-head games against the Lions. P.S., Detroit is 4-0-1 ATS in its last five Turkey Day games.
LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (4-6) at DALLAS (5-5) - 4:30 p.m. ET, CBS
While we're at it, note the Dallas Cowboys are a collective 30-18-1 SU all-time on Thanksgiving Day games but note America's Team actually has lost four of its last seven Turkey Day games ... so there! And, truth be told, there has not been a whole lot of winning for the Cowboys lately as the six-game suspension handed down to superstar RB Zeke Elliott really has pulled the rug out of this here-and-now Dallas campaign (and it doesn't help Cowboys' matters that QB Dak Prescott was a virtual turnover machine in last Sunday Night's 37-9 roll-over-and-play-dead loss to Philadelphia).
Give props to the Chargers - they were 0-4 SU (straight-up) this year but have righted the ship with a pair of defensive scores and an energized QB Philip Rivers keying last weekend's runaway win against Buffalo - if Rivers-to-WR Keenan Allen combo heats up here, watch out!
Spread Stats - The LA Chargers have covered five of their last six games following a horrid 0-3-1 spread start to this current campaign; the Cowboys, meanwhile, are a dead-even but vig-losing 5-5 this year and just 11-19-1 against the odds at home since the start of the 2014 season.
On Thursday Night, it's ...
NEW YORK GIANTS (2-8) at WASHINGTON (4-6) - 8:30 p.m. ET, NBC
Better believe that both of these snake-bitten NFC East squads have suffered their fair share of tough losses this year: The Giants, remember, watched their season implode way back when with the last-second Week 3 and Week 4 losses at Philadelphia and Tampa Bay, respectively, while last week's Redskins loss in New Orleans - after once leading by 15 points - was a major dagger to the D.C. crew that also has lost really harsh games in Kansas City, in Philly and at home two weeks ago versus above-mentioned Minnesota. The 'Skins are without RB Chris Thompson (broken leg) who was called the "best player" on the team by his head coach Jay Gruden following last week's bitter loss inside the Superdome.
Spread Stats - The Giants have banged out pointspread victories in six of their last eight battles versus the 'Skins and note Washington's 0-and-3 spreadwise in NFC East games this season.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL KEY THURSDAY/FRIDAY PREVIEWS
On Thanksgiving Night, it's ...
OLE MISS (5-6, 2-5 SEC) at #14 MISSISSIPPI STATE (8-3, 4-3 SEC) - 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
The ole Egg Bowl is always a gas but key question here is can Ole Miss defense somehow slow down Miss State run/pass dual threat QB Nick Fitzgerald. Hey, the MSU Bulldogs could be Cotton Bowl-bound with a win here.
Spread Stats - Miss State's covered seven of its first 11 games this year while Ole Miss has failed to cover seven of itsy first 11 affairs this season.
On Friday, it's ...
#2 MIAMI (10-0, 7-0 ACC) at PITTSBURGH (4-7, 2-5 ACC) - 12 p.m. ET, ABC
The Miami Hurricanes have been popped back into the #2 hole in this week's College Football Playoff rankings (always should have stayed ahead of Clemson!) but head coach Mark Richt would like a drama-free game here following last week's major comeback against Virginia - the 'Cane pass defense was shoddy there and has a little something to prove. Hey, someone make sure to bring along the "Turnover Chain"!
Spread Stats - Despite all the glitz of this unbeaten season, "The U" is just an average 5-5 ATS this year and overall the Hurricanes are 12-6 vig-wise away the past two-plus seasons. Pittsburgh's 5-5-1 odds-wise this year and composite 16-17-2 ATS under third-year boss Pat Narduzzi.
SOUTH FLORIDA (9-1, 6-1 AAC) at #15 UCF (10-0, 7-0 AAC) - 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC
They're calling this the "War on I-4" and the best game on this day-after-Thanksgiving Day card should be a real beauty - the underdog USF Bulls have a superstar in QB Quinton Flowers (2,097 yards passing with 15 TDs and 870 yards rushing with 9 TDs) while the UCF Golden Knights sport the nation's fifth-best offense starring QB Milton McKenzie (see 2,928 yards passing with 26 TDs and 5 rushing scores). IF UCF wins here and wins the American Athletic Conference Championship Game, it'll be part of the New Year's bowl mix ... maybe an Orange Bowl showdown against the Clemson/Miami loser.
Spread Stats - UCF has notched pointspread wins in seven of its first 10 games this year but the Golden Knights enter this day-after-Thanksgiving Day bash having failed to cover four of their last six games against rival USF. The visiting Bulls have staggered lately with four consecutive pointspread setbacks.
