On Saturday, it's ...
#3 GEORGIA (7-0, 4-0 SEC) vs. FLORIDA (3-3, 3-2 SEC) - 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS
Amidst a bizarre week that included claims by embattled Florida head coach Jim McElwain that there's been "death threats" against either his team or himself (not substantiated by the school itself), the two-TD underdog Gators stagger into this rivalry game and the $64,000 question is will Georgia be standing at year's end come the aforementioned playoffs (which might mean two SEC teams in the so-called Final Four)? No doubt Georgia Dawg RBs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel - they've combined for 1,180 rushing yards this season - will be the central characters here and so holding 'em to less than a buck-and-a-quarter yards rushing will allow Florida to hang tough. Otherwise, Georgia could run wild and win by, well, more than the 14-point price tag.
#2 PENN STATE (7-0, 4-0 Big 10) at #6 OHIO STATE (6-1, 4-0 Big 10) - 3:30 p.m. ET, Fox
Hey, if the folks at Fox promote this game anymore, our heads are gonna explode! Still, it is the most meaningful game on this last-weekend-in-October docket and who can forget last year when Ohio State came into this Big 10 tilt ranked #2 in the land and suffered a painful 24-21 loss as 17.5-point favorites? If 6.5-point pup Penn State is gonna pull the surprise here, then it's a no-brainer that Heisman Trophy candidate RB Saqoun Barkley (6.5 ypc average and 8 TDs) must be a stat-sheet stuffer while the Buckeyes will ask frosh RB J.K. Dobbins (775 yards rushing) to move the chains and keep this hot-hot-hot O-State offense shining (see 54, 56, 62 and 56 points in last four outings).
Here's our top under-the-radar game for this Saturday, Oct. 28:
GEORGIA TECH (4-2, 3-1 ACC) at #7 CLEMSON (6-1, 4-1 ACC) - 8 p.m. ET, ABC
Hey, hope you - and the national sports media - ain't "sleeping" the defending champion Clemson Tigers.Oh, sure, since Clemson's still inexplicable 27-24 loss at 23.5-point dog Syracuse back on Friday the 13th, the football world has forgotten all about Dabo Swinney's squad but a healthy win here against two-touch dog Georgia Tech - and some help from above in the polls - could have Clemson back/near the proverbial driver's seat faster than you can say Deshaun Watson! If Clemson's defense can't halt a Tech ground game averaging 5.78 yards per pop, then forget everything we're writing here!
NFL WEEK 8
It's safe to say that the Baltimore Ravens won't be sending any holiday gift baskets to Miami LB Kiko Alonso this year: The slam-bang hit on Alonso against Ravens' QB Joe Flacco was the signature moment of Baltimore's easy-as-pie 40-0 win last night against the Fish - yes, the Baltimore quarterback suffered a concussion on the play and Alonso didn't have to go that hard into a sliding Flacco but gotta say that it all happened so fast we can't pin 100 percent blame on the Miami defender. Okay?
Still, the gist of the game otherwise was that Miami's offense - no QB Jay Cutler - took two giant steps backwards and even surrendered a pair of defensive TDs while the Ravens' long-suffering offensive line could be taking shape with RB Alex Collins (113 yards on 18 carries) showing major moxie. Don't look now but the Ravens are 4-4 SU (straight-up) and not in bad shape in terms of a potential wild card spot in the very jumbled AFC.
Yes, Pittsburgh's two full games ahead in the loss column over Baltimore in the AFC North but let's just say John Harbaugh's guys this weekend will be rooting against the likes of the Los Angeles Chargers and the Houston Texans come Sunday.
