PLUS WE RECAP LAST NIGHT’S

#2 OHIO STATE’S 49-21 WIN/COVER …

THE NFL REPORT:

(FINALLY) THE PRESEASON IS

IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR

Remember that old advertising tagline …

“We’re #2 – we try harder”.

Okay, so a certain automobile company no longer uses that catchy phrase (so we’re not stealing anything!) but we thought about that following last night’s win by the #2 Ohio State Buckeyes.

True, the ‘Eyes might have looked more than a little sluggish when they trailed 21-point home underdog Indiana 14-13 at the half but that break-neck speed that O-State’s wide receivers sport came in handy after intermission and so, heading into a Labor Day weekend when #1 Alabama is gonna duel #3 Florida State in the matchup that has everyone going crazy, there’s #2 Ohio State holding firm their spot right near the top of the polls with a neat win/cover to kick off their here-and-now season.

If freshman running back J.K. Dobbins (29 carries for 181 yards rushing) didn’t get you thinking about Ohio State RBs past (think Archie Griffin, Maurice Clarett) than all you had to do was marvel at the brilliant play of veteran QB J.T. Barrett who aired three touchdown passes and allowed the Buckeyes to score the game’s final 29 points.

Think the Indiana fans regret that “over-rated” chant they had going early in the second half? You bet!

COLLEGE FOOTBALL – FRIDAY NITE MENU

Tonight, it’s …

#8 WASHINGTON at RUTGERS – 8 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

One year removed from making it to the College Football Playoffs, the here-and-now Washington Huskies are getting hyped to the hilt with a preseason top 10 ranking and a quarterback who could be part of the Heisman Trophy mix in NYC come December. If QB Jake Browning (3,430 yards passing with 43 TDs last year) can “get vertical” with his pass-catchers here against an overmatched Rutgers defense that surrendered 48-or-more points on four different occasions, than this could be name-the-score time in the Garden State.

Spread Stats – Washington is a solid 12-8 ATS (against the spread) in away games under fourth-year head coach Chris Petersen and the UW Huskies also have notched five-of-six spread covers when playing non-league foes the past couple of years. On the flip side, Rutgers is a dismal 7-14-1 vig-wise overall the past two years.

UTAH STATE at #9 WISCONSIN – 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

The stats don’t lie: The Wisky Badgers have won 11, 10 and 11 games the past three years and they were a mere play or two away from going to last year’s Rose Bowl before Penn State stunned ‘em with a big second half in the Big 10 Championship Game. Now, Paul Chryst’s club is a resounding four-TD betting favorite for this clash at Camp Randall Stadium – don’t forget the “jump around” bit at the end of the third quarter, folks – and all eyes will be trained on a ground game that uncharacteristically ranked just 39th in the nation in rushing – frosh RB Jonathan Taylor could be the team’s real gem after exploding in a mid-August scrimmage.

Spread Stats – Wisconsin is fresh off a 9-4-1 ATS campaign that included double-digit covers against Akron, Illinois and Purdue. Note that the Badgers have covered their last four on-the-board home openers. Meanwhile, visiting Utah State’s 3-10 spreadwise away the past two years.

Note that there’s a couple of under-the-radar solid matchups on this Friday night menu including Colorado State (1-0) versus Colorado and Boston College at Northern Illinois.

The CSU Rams have been taking “all the money” this week – Colorado opened up as a 7-point betting favorite and it’s been sheared down to 3.5 points – while note road favorite BC opened as a 1.5-point fav and it’s up to 3.5 points.

In tomorrow’s Jim Sez we’ll get you that Alabama vs. Florida State preview plus lots more, so don’t miss out!

NFL PRESEASON 2017 IS IN THE BOOKS

Here’s some little tidbits regarding last night’s NFL Preseason action:

The Denver Broncos – a 30-2 winner as 2.5-point home favorites against Arizona – finished up the exhibition sked a perfect 4-and-oh SU (straight-up) for the first time since 2005 …

The Baltimore Ravens also registered a 4-0 SU mark this summer – last night’s 14-13 win at 3-point fav New Orleans was a big-time winner for the Jim Hurley Network! – and what about this defense that yielded a mere 32 points in wins/covers against Washington/Miami/Buffalo/New Orleans? It appears the Ravens really hit the proverbial jackpot with first-round draftee CB Marlon Humphrey (Alabama) who made four tackles, forced a fumble and broke up a pass in the road win against the Saints …

Finally, the evening’s only shutout was Cleveland’s 25-0 triumph at 4-point fav Chicago – the Bears played rookie QB Mitchel Trubisky sparingly (2-of-5 passing for 10 yards) but the Browns had a feel-good preseason with a 4-0 SU mark and maybe they found their quarterback of the future too with DeShone Kizer. Then, again, we’ve heard that before, right?
