NFL Preseason Pointspread News -- And More!
THE NFL 2017 SEASON IS RIGHT AROUND THE BEND, BUT TODAY WE'RE ANSWERING ALL YOUR PRESEASON POINTSPREAD QUERIES AND WE PUT A WRAP ON NFL PRESEASON WEEK 3 PLAY
COLLEGE FOOTBALL '17 IS OFF-AND-RUNNIN' AS #14 STANFORD COVERS THE WEEKEND'S HEFTY PRICE TAG IN OPENER, BUT #19 USF DOES NOT!
Go ahead ... Ask us how NFL Preseason Betting Favorites have fared so far this month and the answer may surprise you:
The NFL chalk this summer is just 19-21-4 ATS (against the spread) with 5 Pick 'Em games tossed into the mix (that's a .475 winning percentage) and if you happen to be wondering about the always-popular "totals plays" then take note that "Overs" are 21-27-1 versus the vig (a .438 winning rate).
Gotta admit that before we tallied up all the numbers following Sunday night's thrill-a-minute game - see Minnesota 32, Sam Francisco 31 - we thought the Favs and Overs were doing pretty good but not the case and even in an NFL Preseason Week 3 where fans witnessed Eagles 38, Dolphins 31; and Giants 32, Jets 31; and the aforementioned Niners-Vikes clash where 63 points were scored, the "Unders" have banged out a profit thus far - actually a $390 profit based on our usual $100-per-play wager - and that's pretty interesting when you consider just how much passing we've seen in these exhibition games. Just sayin'!
In fact, here's the Preseason Week-by-Week breakdown of Sides & Totals action so far:
|Pre Week 1||7-7-0 (2 PK)||6-10-0|
|Pre Week 2||6-7-1 (2 PK)||7-8-1|
|Pre Week 3||6-7-2 (1 PK)||7-9-0|
|Bottom Line||19-21-4 (5 PK)||21-27-1|
Meanwhile, lots to re-cap when it comes to the just-completed NFL Preseason Week 3 menu - no doubt the season-ending injuries to New England WR Julian Edelman, Kansas City RB Spencer Ware and Chicago WR Cam Meredith were all major bummers - and we'll have some thoughts/observations in a moment but first this key reminder as we close in on the NFL Regular Season that starts on Thursday, Sept. 7th and the College Football Season that's really set to explode this Thursday-thru-Monday:

In NFL Preseason Week 3 play ...
Wonderfully entertaining game in Minny on Sunday night as the 6-point fav host Vikings roared back to win at the wire 32-31 when third-string QB Taylor Heinicke dove inside the pylon for the game-winning two-point conversion - but you probably didn't catch head coach Mike Zimmer cracking any smiles after this tilt as his first-string offense (starring QB Sam Bradford) didn't do much at all again: In 13 offensive possessions this summer, the first-teamers on this Minnesota attack have registered one field goal and 11 punts and once had the halftime clock run out on 'em. Ugh!
On the flip side, San Fran rookie head coach Kyle Shanahan loved the way his starting slinger Brian Hoyer handled things in Minnesota - note that Hoyer threw for 176 yards and two TDs (they were 46- and 24-yarders) - and you can see a real comfort level developing between Hoyer and WR Pierre Garcon (six catches for 64 yards ...
Is there concern in the nation's capital when it comes to this Washington Redskins' offense? Quarterback Kirk Cousins threw a "pick six" returned by Cincinnati's bad-boy LB Vontaze Burfict and note the 'Skins wound up with nine three-and-outs in 15 possessions this summer for their first-string offense. Cousins was quick to say "my bad" afterwards but the reality is TE Jordan Reed (two catches for 12 yards in the 23-17 win against the Bengals on Sunday) has not been himself this summer with a nagging toe injury and second-year WR Josh Doctson was a DNP with hamstring and groin issues. When is this kid ever healthy?
COLLEGE FOOTBALL'S SEASON-OPENING WEEKEND
There were a pair of ranked teams getting into the swing of things on a rather abbreviated card this past Saturday and while #14 Stanford simply bombarded 30-point underdog Rice 62-7 - can someone please tell us why the Cardinal was kicking a fourth-quarter field goal with a 52-0 lead? - the #19th-ranked USF Bulls had more than a few hiccups in an eventual 42-22 non-cover win at San Jose State ... a Jim Hurley Network winner plus the bundle of points!
Hey, the Bulls were down 16-0 before you blinked an eye and it appeared head coach Charlie Strong's debut with South Florida might have a "Texas Longhorns" type feel to it but the Bulls actually were covering the three-TD price before San Jose State marched 65 yards on 7 plays with half the final quarter left (missed the PAT) to slip under the 21-point price tag.
Best thing we saw from USF? A defense that hunkered down and allowed just that one TD in the game's final three-plus quarters - it was a fourth-and-short stop at the USF 33-yard line late in the opening quarter that jump-started Strong's squad - while the worse thing we saw was a special teams unit that had one punt blocked and one punt shanked. P.S., South Florida's offense got off a mind-numbing 101 plays and the Bulls, in all, rushed for 315 yards after a particularly crummy start.
NOTE: We'll have NCAA Football Previews later in the week here at Jim Sez plus there's lots more NFL Preseason News & Notes too, so don't miss out!
