SPREAD STATS FOR SATURDAY’S FOUR (4)

SEASON-OPENING GAMES

Now here’s something straight from the believe-it-or-not department:

Only one NFL team has ever gone on to win a Super Bowl after going winless in the Preseason (see the 1982 Washington Redskins of NFL Strike fame).

Naturally, we bring up this factoid because the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots are in action this evening in Motown and – just to remind y’all – the Pats have yet to win a game this summer with losses to Jacksonville and Houston the past two weekends.

Okay, so nobody’s sounding the alarm sirens in/around the greater Boston area today but the fact remains the Patriots are one of eight NFL teams seeking their first summertime “W” this week/weekend but it’s 0-and-2 New England that has some folks talkin’ about everything from QB Tom Brady’s age (yes, he just turned 40 earlier in the month) to Bill Belichick’s “hunger” to keep winning.

Gotta say that the five-time champion Patriots really have “nothing to prove” here – of course -- in this Preseason Week 3 affair but you might just get an A+ effort from the AFC East squad when they kick things off in Detroit tonight if they decide to “answer” their critics:

NFL PRESEASON WEEK 3

On Friday night, it’s …

NEW ENGLAND (0-2) at DETROIT (2-0) -- 7 p.m. ET

Okay, so the Pats are not about to subject Mr. Brady to any unnecessary hits here as the future Hall-of-Famer will play a couple of series and then exit stage left but be sure both backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo and third-stringer Jacoby Brissett want to improve on their recent preseason showing plus remember RB Mike Gillislee (hamstring) is ready/rarin’ to go here while Detroit is bound-and-determined to get its rotten ground game in gear, so expect RB Theo Riddick (wrist/missed the Lions’ first two preseason games) to get a bucketful of carries here.

Current Line: Patriots (-2.5) and 43.5 points

KANSAS CITY (1-1) at SEATTLE (2-0) – 8 p.m. ET, CBS

No doubt there was plenty of drama in KC’s off-season as GM John Dorsey was mysteriously canned – why, just because he didn’t shake up a rock-solid roster? – but one pick Dorsey did make before being shown the door was the first-round selection of QB Patrick Mahomes II and tonight should be fun with the former Texas Tech Red Raider going up against that Seattle secondary that’s far from dead. Mahomes should play a couple of quarters here in a reserve role between starter Alex Smith and that is “must-see TV”.

Current Line: Seahawks (- 3) and 43 points

The Jim Hurley Network will be destroying the Las Vegas and offshore books with the NFL Preseason Week 3 card that rolls on Friday-thru-Sunday with a slew of national TV tilts on the gridiron menu.

Get your gridiron weekend started tonight with New England at Detroit and Kansas City at Seattle (latter is on CBS, 8 p.m. ET) plus Saturday it’s the Los Angeles Chargers at Los Angeles Rams (CBS) and then Sunday check out the Fox-TV double-header with Chicago at Tennessee (1 p.m. ET) followed by Cincinnati at Washington (4:30 p.m. ET) and then it’s onto San Francisco at Minnesota (NBC, 8 p.m. ET).

Make sure you’re all aboard with Side & Totals winners as America’s #1 Handicapper bangs out lots of winners in the NFL Preseason, this weekend’s NCAA Football and all the daily Major-League Baseball action either right here online at www.jimhurley.com or via our toll-free telephone # of 1-800-323-4453.

In NFL Preseason Week 3 action on Thursday night, it was …

PHILADELPHIA 38, MIAMI 31 – The Eagles considered this TD win against the visiting Dolphins as a good-news/bad-news tilt: The good was QB Carson Wentz connected for touchdowns with his new receivers WRs Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith from 15 and 50 yards, respectively, but new CB Ronald Darby was super-shaky and the Birds have concerns that their secondary could be a major weak link … not good when you have to face Dallas’ Dak Prescott, Washington’s Kirk Cousins and New York Giants QB Eli Manning twice apiece this year.

Meanwhile, don’t know about you but it appears new Dolphins QB Jay Cutler (105 yards passing with one TD in limited play) has a little extra bounce in his step and that surgically repaired right shoulder looks just fine.

CAROLINA 24, JACKSONVILLE 23 – Ask us and the big news here revolved around who didn’t play for the Jaguars as first-round draftee RB Leonard Fournette (foot) and WR Marqise Lee (ankle) both sat out this “dress rehearsal” game and that’s key because Jacksonville ain’t going anywhere this ’17 season if Fournette doesn’t move the chains and if Lee isn’t a prime-time WR1 playmaker. Granted, Carolina QB Cam Newton (2-of-2 passing for 21 yards and 1 TD) was pretty much kept under wraps as he continues to reound from off-season rotator cuff surgery.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL QUICKIE SPREAD STATS

There’s four on-the-board tilts in College Football on the Saturday agenda – we’ll get you a couple of previews tomorrow – but right now check out some key spread stats:

OREGON STATE at COLORADO STATE – The visiting Beavers are 5-10-1 ATS (against the spread) away the past three years while the C-State Rams conversely are 10-5-1 in non-league affairs the past four years.

USF at SAN JOSE STATE – The heavy-duty favored South Florida Bulls covered 7-of-11 games last year when in the chalk role.

RICE vs. STANFORD (at Sydney, Australia) – The Pac-12 kids actually are 0-5 versus the vig in their last five season-opening games.

NOTE: Lots of NFL Preseason Week 3 goodies in the next edition of Jim Sez, so don’t miss out!
