Trade Deadline Winners and HOG Game Preview
THE MLB TRADE DEADLINE REAL WINNERS AND LOSERS ...
PLUS THURSDAY'S NFL HALL OF FAME GAME PREVIEW AS COWBOYS, CARDINALS CLASH IN CANTON
Do you think that the 74-and-31 Los Angeles Dodgers were the biggest winners at the Major-League Baseball Trade Deadline on Monday? Yu bet!
The acquisition of RHP Yu Darvish from the Texas Rangers was an absolute stroke of genius on many fronts by the Dodgers' brain trust - first and foremost it protects the National League West team by having a true ace in case these recent back problems by LHP Clayton Kershaw are worse than imagined and it gives the LA gang a star righty in a rotation littered with lefties who may well run into the righthanded bats of Kris Bryant and Javier Baez and the like should the defending champion Chicago Cubs be standing in the Dodgers' path come October.
Okay, so Darvish has not been dominant by any means this 2017 season: The now-former Rangers star has pitched to a 4.01 ERA with 148 Ks in 137 innings pitched en route to a 6-9 record but decent 1.17 WHIP.
Throw in the fact the Dodgers also struck it rich with now-former Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Tony Watson who gives Davey Roberts' squad a key lefty out of the pen (he had 10 saves this year before being yanked as the Bucs' closer) and it was just another day in paradise for a Dodgers' team that is distancing itself from everyone around as the best team in the bigs this year.
Meanwhile, there was big trade news on the other coast as the New York Yankees - as expected -- acquired Oakland A's righty Sonny Gray (6-5, 1.18 WHIP with 94 Ks and 30 BBs) and, while the deal was generally hailed by New York City sports talkies, the fact of the matter is the Yankees really traded off some key future pieces including now-injured RHP James Kaprielian who could be a superstar in two or three years' time plus INF Jorge Mateo who was a real blue-chipper in the Bombers' system. If the 27-year-old Gray is injury-prone (as has been his case as a pro) then it'll be the A's laughing last in 2019 or 2020.
We say Dodgers are trade deadline winners; Yanks, actually, trade deadline down-the-road losers.
And one more thing: The Colorado Rockies get a "winner" label attached for the just-before-July 31st acquisition of C Jonathan Lucroy. Okay, so the former Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers' star has not exactly enjoyed a stellar '17 season (see .242 batting average with only 4 home runs and 27 RBI in 77 games) but gotta believe he'll have a born-again career at Coors Field where he will fit neatly into that booming lineup. Good get by the Rockies.
P.S., sleeper trade consummated on Monday: Loved Baltimore's pick-up of SS Tim Beckham from Tampa Bay as the Orioles needed a lift and Beckham should pop a few balls out of Camden Yards - that O's lineup just added some needed length. Winner!

NFL HALL OF FAME GAME
Can you dig it? The NFL Preseason swings into action on Thursday night with a rare NFC vs. NFC showdown in the Hall of Fame Game ... here's a quick-hitter preview:
HALL OF FAME GAME - at Canton, OH; 8 p.m. ET, NBC
DALLAS vs. ARIZONA - Let's start off by telling y'all that the Cowboys figure to play QB Dak Prescott and fellow second-year RB Ezekiel Elliott here (don't expect more than single series from either of 'em) in this preseason opener while the Cardinals already have stated veteran WR Larry Fitzgerald (a future first-ballot Hall of Famer), QB Carson Palmer and vet LB Karlos Dansby all will sit out this affair,
No doubt the Cowboys remain the "headline" team here even though many of the team's off-season headlines included arrests, suspensions and the like but there's better depth on the 'Boys than in years past and so head coach Jason Garrett figures to trot out some decent talent in the third and/or fourth quarters - not so sure we can say the same about the Redbirds who do have a better stable of running backs than in recent times with star RB David Johnson getting backup help from Chris Johnson, Andre Ellington and Kerwynn Williams.
Okay, so both Garrett and 'Zona head coach Bruce Arians "don't care" much who wins this H.O.F. Game but if the Cards get 30-plus rushes from its top four backs than they likely sport the advantage here ... make sure you get the Sides/Totals winners here on game-day afternoon at 1-800-323-4453 or here online
Spread Notes - For what it's worth, last year Dallas finished with a 10-6-1 ATS (against the spread) mark including that home playoff loss versus Green Bay; Arizona registered an ugly 6-10 ATS log a year ago and that included just three road covers.
NOTE: Lots of NFL Preseason and College Football goodies comin' your way later this week in Jim Sez. We'll have more from the NFL summer training camps plus there's more College Football Conference Snapshots with the Big 12 up next!
